Marvin Gaye's 'Here my Dear'

I bought this album about late-mid last year and I've put it off for a while but since late december I've been slowly listening to it and really feeling it, bit by bit. The melodies in this album as fantasic, and his vocals as always are outstanding. Who's with me?

okay one more tiiiiime

Here my dear was recorded due to the fact of Marvin's divorce settlement with Anna Gordy.the ruling was that the next album, all the revenue was to be given to Anna.

marvin was pissed about this, what was a "throwaway" album considered by Marvin, turned out to be the most emotional, angry, bitter, deep, righteous albums Motown had seen from Marvin besides "whats going on" which was recorded in 1968 and placed on the shelves for 2 years because Motowmn was "scared" of its Content.

Yes, I agree that this is one of his best. Although, I have to admit that I don't listen to it much these days. I bought his boxed set a few years ago and I listen to that much more often than his individual albums.

Beautiful album (Anna's Song!). . . and amazingly, mostly based on improvised jams.

Here's some more background on the 'album as divorce settlement' story:

Where's that old thread where I drooled all over this album? Drooled poetically, of course.

An absolute, utter emotional masterpiece, yes.

I'm surprised more people don't mention "When Did You Stop Loving Me, When Did I Stop Loving You." That's the song that breaks me, right there. "Now as I recall, we tried a million times...again, and again and again...and that isn't all...I gave my love to you..." This song never loses its emotional punch for me.

Like I've said before, I don't know how anyone could not be moved when he sings about realizing the futility of his marriage vows and tries to imagine a better way:

So if a fresh new love comes in
I won't say those words again
Instead I'll say I'll try
to love and protect you
with all my heart, long as you want me to, baby

I still get chills at that part! touched

And there it is. In one album, he'll give you chills, tears, laughter...moments where you think he's an angel, and others where you realize, starkly, how fragilely and rawly human he really was. I'll never stop saying it: there will never be another like Marvin.
