Ashlee Simpson: The Greatest TV show!

You have to hand it to MTV, they've created the most fascinating case study I've ever seen on that network, and possibly the most entertaining half-hour since "Daria" left the air.

You can practically see the smirking faces of MTV behind the camera as Ashlee looks and sounds as dumb as her older sister. The catch is while Jessica quickly accessed the situation and adapted with aplomb, Ashlee seems oblivious to the fact that she is totally out of her element as a rocker.

Isn't a faker supposed to be aware of their fakery? Ashlee has somehow mastered the talent of seeming sincere. Oh scratch that, she's unaware. So there's two ways od enjoying Ashlee. There's the obvious way, as the train wreck that it is. Or you can actually sympathize with her because if you've been paying attention you knew that lipsyncing disasters and "live" fiascos were inevitable. You can root for the underdog and be comforted in the fact that yes, ANYONE, can become a star with the right backing and connections.

Then you look at Ashlee, with her annoyingly, cutsey was she spells her name and the way she perfectly applies her lip gloss. The way she flounders in the studio and talks to the camera in a like, you know, totally sincere way as she struggles through such hardships as fighting with her dad and deciding which wig looks best on video shoots.

Tonight they go behind the scenes of her SNL fiasco. Watch the show sway your view and make you champion Ashlee! You'll soon become a fan.

See then you should watch Ashlee. Same affect with no physical (argueable) discomfort.

I'd love to see how they put a spin on the SNL thing.
It still doesn't change the fact that 'ol girl has no ear at all. Plus, if she had even a tad bit of a rappor with her band, she could have just stopped everything and switched gearssss as my friend Baabb Schworshky would say.

Ashlee is a perfect use of time. It's educational. It's like an expose. You're like a fly on the wall in the mad world of celebrity building upping. Plus it plays like a parody when it's trying to be serious (when Ash is trying anyways) and is just plain funny when it's being exploitative.

A little aside: During it's premiere the producers of the show obviously matched Ashlee up with this cute boy to manufacture some romance. Little did Ashlee know that Josh (that's his name) was gay and showed absolutely NO interest in her on camera. He lasted all of one episode. They then matched her up with the woefully annoying Brian Cabrerra (I think that's how it's spelled). He was more of a friend and MTV upstart who was coming out with his own album. Still no sparks but he gets bonus points for having a second rate Clay Aiken haircut.

I don't know if it's a generation gap or if the whole concept of the show is just too *yuck* period, but if the Ashlee Simpson show was the only show left on tv I'd never watch tv again.

I can see that reaction. You either role your eyes in boredom or you can have an are-they-for-real reaction that'll keep you transfixed. It's a slippery slope that Ashlee Simpson show is...

I admit I got sucked into a few episodes of that Surreal Life with Flavor Flav and Charo, but that was entertaining for about 2 weeks. How much are you really getting out of it week after week?

I hate reality shows in general and totally fell out with American Idol, the only one I was truly addicted to, but the whole idea of the industry making something out of nothing (Ashlee's talent) for the whole world to see fascinates me. The fact that they make it humorous is a bonus.

I'd do her sister.

Wow! Isn't that the most hideous, sarcastic thing anyone could say when discussing Ashlee Simpson. Cruel on so many levels!

Now THIS is awkward!

Oh well, I can chalk up my reaction to my local radio station.

And Ryan can take solace in the fact that he's somebody and I'm nobody.

That's a good question. Since everything about this show is suspect to me I question if they reshot the NYC footage as well. What's also suspect was the fact that season one ended months ago. It's strange that they have no story from when her album debuted through her debacle on SNL. What throws a monkey wrench in the theory is that it's well documented on SNL that she stormed off in tears during her sound check that day.

He plays Ashlee's squeeze on the show. He had a sizeable hit this past summer with a song called "All The Way Down" I believe. What I didn't know was that local boy Jhonny Reznik produced his album, which sorta puts him more in my good graces. But I had a knee-jerk reaction to him because of "The Ashlee Simpson Show".

Latest classic rock T-shirt cred:

Last night Ashlee was sporting a Led Zeppelin T-shirt.
