I love her. I don't have enough of her work but I have some of it. She inspired me not only to learn music but to learn engineering and production.

I am not African. Africa is in me, but I cannot return.
I am not taína. Taíno is in me, but there is no way back.
I am not european. Europe lives in me, but I have no home there.
I am new. History made me. My first language was spanglish.

I saw her this past fall at the University of Pittsburgh; she was speaking at a jazz seminar. I'm not familiar with much of her work, but she came across as an extremely likeable, smart woman.

She and Brenda Russell came to my school of arts in Harlem and made a lecture about melodic structre and how to improvise without "sloppy-ness".

It was pretty good actualy, both ladies have a sense of humor and they neva appeared to be taking themselves seriously. They worked the students.

At some point, Patrice played a stride piano medley and I was soooo shocked with her rendition of of Fats Waller's "Handfule Of Keys",,I knew she was bad but I neva knew she was THAAAAT bad. Homegirl could swing hard music

Back then the only thing I had was her "Haven't You Heard? The Best of" compilation but after that lecture I went back and bought ALL of her albums(Well,,except for "Shout It Out" which I'm still searching for).

Givin' It Up's Givin Up
When I Found You
Wishful Thinking
Cha-Cha
Didn't You Know
(She Will)Take You Down To Love
Remind Me
Feels So Real
Forget Me Nots
Perfect Love
All My Love
Hang It Up
Haven't You Heard

There's another underappreciated one. Terrific songwriter.

Both are friends, they collaporated on Trice's song "Break Out!" from her "Str8 From The Heart" album.

BTW Brenda was the writer of Rufus & CK's hit "Pardon Me(You Remind Me Of A Friend)" nod
