How do I start about getting into Sun-Ra?

Even though I'm still in the process of digesting the work of iconoclasts/freaks who are closer to our generation (Frank Zappa, Todd Rundgren, George Clinton) but I can't help but be intrigued by Sun Ra's reputation and am curious to know what's the best way to start getting into him.

I don't have any of his music, but I
heard some of his stuff on a jazz radio station.....
I remember seeing a performance of his, along time ago.....
He's a great pianist.....

If you know nothing about his early history or influences (Fletcher Henderson), I might suggest...

...Sound Sun Pleasure
(This includes arrangements of 'Round Midnight, I Could Have Danced All Night, Deep Purple, etc.)

This may be Sun Ra at his most "earth-bound". It also establishes the fact that at his core this was a learned musician and not some strange-o that decide to freak "*...just for the funk of it".
*(Ask sinisterpentatonic about the Sun-Ra/George Clinton connections.) nod

You can generally always trace the more avant-garde jazzers back to firm roots in traditional Jazz idioms before being inspired to step through the looking glass.

There's always the piece that he's most closely associated with...

...Space Is The Place

If you'd really like to vist "...the outskirts of infinity", treat yourself to the DVD...

...Space Is The Place

As for the rest of his catalogue, "...just float your little mind around.", it's worth the journey.

Since I know you're also into Zappa, you might find this interesting reading:

I was a bit thrown off by track 1 on Space is the Place, but immediately dug the rest of it.
