Anybody remember these two songs from 1987? Sting and U2 had both been involved with Amnesty International in 1986, and I'm guessing that this inspired both cuts. The two actually could be opposite sides of the same coin.

I love them both, for different reasons. They both start off as very somber songs about the women remaining after the genocides, but Sting's song picks up tempo about halfway through and almost sambas until the end. The U2 track remains very understated throughout, yet still ends the album on a note of uplift.

When people say that popular music hasn't been about anything since the 60's or 70's, I always think about these two songs in particular; two huge stars on the scene at this point in time weren't just singing typical love songs....
