Samuel L. Jackson Refuses To Play Opposite 50 Cents In His Debut Movie!

SAM JACKSON SAYS NO TO 50 CENT FILM: 'Maybe if he does five movies and he shows some talent'

SAM JACKSON SAYS NO TO 50 CENT FILM: 'Maybe if he does five movies and he shows some talent'

Samuel L. Jackson has already made his disdain for working with rappers known. This was underscored even more so recently when the actor turned down the chance to work with one of his movie icons, Jim Sheridan, because the film, "Locked And Loaded," directed by Sheridan, also stars rapper 50 Cent.

Jackson says he's always wanted to work with Irish moviemaker and was thrilled when he heard he was being targeted for a new film by the director — until he realized he would be starring opposite 50 Cent in his movie debut.

"Hollywood people tend to think that because one is successful in one aspect of entertainment they can bring them into this particular world and make a success out of them," Jackson said in a statement.

Jackson suggested that the studio merely wanted to exploit his name to give the hip-hop star's first film legitimacy. (It reportedly is "loosely based" on his life.) In his statement, Jackson asks, "What is it about 50 Cent that makes Jim Sheridan say: 'I'd really like to make a movie with him?'"

In the meantime, Jackson apparently had no problem working with hip hop singer Ashanti in "Coach Carter," opening Friday. Ashanti, more than holds her own in the film, by the way. She's definitely got acting chops.

Jackson hasn't closed the door on working with Fiddy entirely, however.

"Maybe if he does five movies and he shows some talent," Jackson is quoted as saying about the rapper.

Ashanti's always been kind of a Brandy/Hillary Duff/Beyonce type, though, hasn't she? I see her as someone who considers herself as an all-around "entertainer", rather than just a recording artist or an actress. I'm not saying I think she's particularly GREAT at any of it, I'm just sayin' that I can see how someone like Samuel L. Jackson would consider her a legit actress before 50 Cent...but then again, look at Ice Cube - I don't think he's a great actor either, but he's pulled it off enough that he's been able to redefine his career through movies. So, like, whatever. Who knows...

Well, if I were a black actor, particularly a young black actor, I would get really tired of rappers sucking up all of the work. Other than Mos Def, Ice Cube and Tupac, and maybe a few others, most rappers can't act but get gigs anyway.

I personaly understand Sam's frustration. There we have COUNTLESS of young black actors/actresses who actualy devoted time, blood, sweat and tear to build their craft in order to make a living from it. And here goes these talentless rappers pulling the rug from under their feet just for the sake of making the movies commercial.

But I don't blame those rappers,I blame thos MOVIE MAKERS(directors and producers) 4 casting them in the 1st place.

Don't get me wrong tho coz I'm not against casting rappers/singers, I'm against putting them on the LEAD when they don't even have chops to pull.

Good for Sam. It took Mr. Jackson 20 years to finally get his break the movies. (He was theater actor and set-builder). He shouldn't have to do a movie with 50 Cent (of all people) who hasn't don't catbooshit other than make a couple of rap albums and get shot multiple times.

Movie with LL Cool J ... fine
Ice Cube ... fine
Mos Def ... fine
even the dude that used to play "Q" on Brandy (can't call his name right now)...

50 Cent ... hell no.

Meanwhile, Coach Carter looks like a more cliche-ridden version of the Morgan Freeman movie Lean On Me.

A mosaic career of medicority, if you will?

I think Sam Jackson is right on but should have at least said "Can I see an audition" before overacting. Yes, he has been in movies with rappers but they are pretty good actors. LL in "Swat" and I think he is in the new Ice Cube movie which is a "XXX" (the Vin Disel action flick...don't get it twisted) spin off.

You didn't mention Ice-T, who is great in "Law and Order: SVU" and really good in movies as well. Shit, has he released anything musically lately?

How about "Hoosiers" or "Remember the Titans". I was thining the same thing and frankly, Sam's choices have unfornately been much more miss than hit after "Pulp Ficiton" (his first starring role was "Great White Hope"...I mean, come on!). Ebert and Roeper reviewed and said it could be cliche but isn't (unless you say it and think they are wrong).

clapping My friend and I were talking about this I pretty much said what you did. It totally unfair to see these rappers or singers have these big film roles when they've only done 1 or 2 albums and that doesn't even tell us that you can act, especially if you can't sing or rap for that matter. Most of them can't act anyway.
I'm not a fan of "old Prince". I'm not a fan of "new Prince". I'm just a fan of Prince. Simple as that

Janet was an actress long before she was a singer.

Thank you. Janet has been acting since she was a little girl in the 1970s.

I'm also glad Samual Jackson spoke up. I'm tired of these directors thinking these rappers will bring people to their crappy movies. There are plenty of minority actors out there in acting classes busting their asses trying to get somewhere, let's give them a chance and leave the rappers to just focus on rapping.

Right! There are so many talented young black actors that are barely able to get in a movie let alone a major studio film. However, all these flash in the pan entertainers with no experience are given starring roles to increase profits.

I just can't help but think of the Samuel Jackson beer commerical on Chappelle Show. Short but very sweet. He could have done that for the whole show and had me laughing. It wasn't that accurate as to how he really is but funny as hell.

"Yes they deserved to die and I hope they burn in hell!" and then he grabs some peanuts or chips and sinks back under the chair. "Hmmm, bitch!"
