I mean, this character was no hero. He was a gangsta and drug dealer. So I guess that's why so many rappers admired Tony Montana. For the gangsta element I suppose.

well i believe that "scarface" is viewed as a hip hop favorite because even though al pacino's character "tony montana" was a criminal, killer, and drug dealer, he rose from poverty to achieve his dreams, even if they weren't the right dreams to achieve, nevertheless, he achieved them, and then lost it all.

I guess it favors those in hip hop because although many "claim" to have come from poverty in the projects and rose to become hip hop artists, it kind of mirrors their life in a similar way.

I personally like "scarface" because I love al pacino. And then because its kind of a comedy to me because of the fake accents that the actors portray. I mean you can't tell me that you don't laugh at least a dozen times at the things al pacino says in the movie. I just like violent movies anyway, its my thing, everybody has a preference.

Don't knock the movie just because it was built on a negative subject. It may not have deserved oscar recognition, but hey most of the good ones aren't recognized by the academy anyway...

as hip-hop influences go, better "scarface" than "steel magnolias", i suppose.

They love it strictly because the criminal element appeals to them. I love the gangsters like Scarface and Al Capone because of their coolness, eliteness, and fashion sense, and attitude. I just don't understand how rappers love these guys but very few of them dress like them. Every now and then, Ice T and Snoop Dogg look pretty sharp but most of the rappers wear jeans and sports jerseys (little boy clothes). You didn't see the real gangsters dressing like "mama's big little boy"...those motherfuckers were clean.!

They need to take a tip from their heros and learn how to dress. There's a difference in "gangster" and "gangsta".

Black culture has been sold a bill of goods as to who their heroes should be. Record companies are eager to sell self-hating people of color role models who glorify criminal behavior, just like the rest of the media. The marketing is quite effective, and a generation of rappers has grown up aspiring to emulate this criminality (even if it has nothing to do with their reality). So the folks in the hood feel like they're in the cool club, and the establishment has them contributing to their own degredation. Everybody's happy!

This doesn't really have anything to do with the topic. But I've always preferred Goodfellas over any of the gangster movies. I liked Scarface ok...I just didn't get what all the hype over it was about.

"Scarface" is just a movie, but what many hip hop artists do is glamorize everything that was considered "cool" about it. Violence, drugs and materialism.

Me too . I was around 6 or 7 and I wanted to be as cool as Wesley Snipes. I still listen to "i'm still waiting" by Johnny Gill and "i'm dreaming" by Christopher williams sometimes
