Mavis Staples

Hello all. I was just watching an old rerun of the Cosby Show (for some reason I remember it being better), but at the end, they were in a church singing some song, and lo and behold, Mavis Staples was front and center doing the solo. So I thought I'd bring up a post on her, seeing as she was fairly present around Prince for some time.

Personally, I was quite a fan of some of her stuff. She's a terrific singer (much better than Rosie Gaines IMO) and her music brought something different to Prince's already different music. You Will Be Moved is one of my better liked songs on 1-800-NEW-FUNK, and The Voice overall has some good stuff.

However, aside from this, I have not heard very much of this genre of music. For those who have, I'd love to hear your opinions, and reccomendations of other groups to check out.

find a 'best of the staple singers' cd...you'll get a healthy dose of mavis on vocals, and some very cool songs...
'respect yourself,''let's do it again'...'i'll take you there..'
the staples were very active in the civil rights movement...they marched with dr. king...
i had the honor of seeing mavis perform in a tribute to dr. king with a gospel choir a few years back, she is still amazing...
the staple singers also did the original recording of 'when will we be paid..' i'm sure most people here knew that...but i thought i'd share just in case....
mavis is one of the great interpreters of song in my opinion...
