Now that I've had time to think about it and get the song titles straight:

1. Flash Back (Wanderland, Tasty)
2. Perfect Day (Wanderland) - I had forgotten that No Doubt was the backing band on this track.
3. Milkshake (Tasty)
4. Get Along With You (Kaleidoscope)
5. Little Suzie (Wanderland)
6. Millionaire (Tasty)
7. Caught Out There (Kaleidoscope)
8. Young, Fresh N' New (Wanderland)
9. I Want Your Love (Kaleidoscope)
10. Mr. U.F.O. Man (Wanderland)

Interesting how you seem to rate Wanderland so high, JanFan. I think Tasty's her best yet.

are you crazy? wanderland is the bollocks! tasty is just good.

You're right about the first bit. Been listening to it non-stop. Great album. Why didn't get a US release?

Yep. The song was originally recorded during No Doubt's "Rock Steady" sessions. Pharrell & Chad's "Hella Good" made it onto the album, but "Perfect Day" didn't. Someone decided it was such a good track and they didn't want to just vault it, so it was given to Kelis. She sings the lead vocals on the track and the boys of No Doubt are who you hear in the background of the track (Tony Kanal - bass guitar, Adrian Young - drums and Tom Dumont - guitar).

Wanderland came at a very funny time for Kelis business/contract-wise. Virgin Records, her former home, was firing people left and right and was going through a mass internal restructuring. Kelis was put on the back burner and got lost in the shuffle of Virgin's label troubles. She knew that she was being abandoned at Virgin, so as soon as Pharrell and Chad got approached by Arista to have their own imprint Star Trak, she signed some papers and came over to Arista (and that was in 2002).

"Wanderland" was becoming more and more of a memory to Kelis and to the public (it had been out in Europe since October 2001), she wanted newer material once mid-2002 rolled around. It was slated to be released in the U.S. all throughout 2002. She was going to release the album in the States as a revamped version with re-recordings of a majority of the original material avec Spymob doing the guitar, drum and keyboard work (similiar to the live band sound of N*E*R*D's "In Search Of") -- that, too, fell through. So, instead of beating a dead horse and dwelling in the past, Wanderland was shelved indefinitely and Kelis moved on to the next project... which became "Tasty" in late 2003.

Milkshake is such a joke. It's the stupidist damn thing I've ever seen and what's funnier is her awful gold teeth. That's just nasty and she looks like a freak with them too. She should spend her money on other things rather than shit like that that only makes her look like an idiot.

Most of the hate in here is largely attributed with folks being unfamiliar with her work. Anyone that caught wiff of Kelis post-Milkshake, automatically zoom into that song (or her "I Hate You So Much Right Now" chant) like its the only stuff the woman did. It's obvious that most of the hate comes from heads that just started to pay attention to Kelis when "Milkshake" was big. She DOES have a body of work that's deserving of a Top 10... and it's damn good. She's largely been a cult urban music figure from 1999-2002 (during that time she made stuff that was very leftfield and different from anything that was on urban radio). When Kaleidoscope dropped in 1999, it sounded like NOTHING on your urban radio dial. It still has that "bugged out, WTF" feel to it. So, I don't take it to heart when heads diss her because they don't even have a rational picture of who Kelis is as an artist. The style of Gwen Stefani's L.A.M.B. was already explored on Kaleidoscope and Wanderland... and to be real, Kelis did a better job and the fantastical, bugged-out "rebel girl" thing.

I'm glad to see there are people who like Kelis. Most don't know her stuff except for the 2 commercial hits and her guest appearances. Sometimes when I rediscover her first 2 albums I forget not only how much I love the songs but sometimes the mellowness of her voice catches me off guard. She can be coarse and she can be very soothing. Aside from that I sorta like that she's not wildly popular and that she doesn't sound like other artists. Kelis is her own chic doing her own thing.

When she toured Europe back in the "GET F#@KED UP!" years, she covered Steppenwolf's "Born To Be Wild," The Eurythmics "Sweet Dreams," Lionel Richie's "Hello" and Nirvana's "Smells Like Teen Spirit" (she closed every set with that song).

I must hear this! sigh

ITA. What people don't realize is that she is not just some hook girl who the Neptunes decided to give some beats to... she is actually talented...(and I'm a fierce critic...Music major...)Kelis is trained in violin, piano and saxophone ,was in The Girls Choir of Harlem as a child, and even went to La Guardia with a drama concentration...she didn't just wake up one day and decided she wanted to perform, she's been doing this her whole life. While I don't think she has the best singing voice I've heard, she's at least creative and different from all of the other chicks out there.Suffice it to say I was saddened when she went all commercial and changed her image and sound for Tasty...she's still my girl though.ok..here's my list...

1.Scared Money
2.Millionare
3.Get Along With You
4.Caught Out There
5.In the Morning
6.Popular Thug
7.Suspended
8.Oasis(unreleased Tasty track)
9.Young,Fresh n' New
10.Get Even

Honorable Mention*Just Like Candy-Foxy Brown and Kelis
*Milkshake(it's darn catchy you have to admit) cool
*Keep It Down
*Wouldn't You Agree
*Easy Come,Easy Go
*Mr UFO Man
*Perfect Day
*Shooting Stars

Wanderland is my Favorite too! biggrin
