Led Zeppelin Anthology and Steve Earle Discussion .
When the best of Led Zeppelin early days & latter days were released seperately, I didn't have the slightest urge to buy either of them. But recently, it seems like everytime I go into a record store, I see this new repackaging of them as one set, and I thought about reconsidering. Especially considering the price: $15. That's how much it'll cost ya to get just one. Anyway, I'm a sucker for the 2 disc anthology. I like 'em for road trips and stuff. When you know you wanna hear so & so, but you can't decide what albums to bring. They're deeper than greatest hits, but not so expansive as a box set. I have most all of the Zep albums in their remastered form, so it's not like I needed the set. But I figured it would be easier than burning my own. But when I picked up the Led Zep set, I was appalled by a lot of the songs that made the cut (especially on disc 2) and all of the classic songs that were missing (on both). So, I decided to burn my own, because i'm kinda douchey like that. Anyway, for the people who care enough., if you were in charge of a Led Zeppelin 2 disc set, what would you include. (see, now it's interactive, and not just me rambling) Disc One: 01. Good Times Bad Times 02. Communication Breakdown 03. Your Time Is Gonna Come 04. Dazed and Confused 05. Whole Lotta Love 06. Thank You 07. Ramble On 08. What Is And What Should Never Be 09. Immigrant Song 10. Hey Hey What Can I Do 11. Since I've Been Loving You 12. Tangerine 13. Black Dog 14. Rock And Roll 15. Going To California 16. When The Levee Breaks 17. Stairway To Heaven Disc Two: 01. Over the Hills and Far Away 02. Dancing Days 03. D'Yer Mak'er 04. The Ocean 05. Houses of the Holy 06. Custard Pie 07. Trampled Underfoot 08. Ten Years Gone 09. Night Flight 10. Kashmir 11. Sick Again 12. Nobody's Fault But Mine 13. All My Love 14. In the Evening 15. Wearing and Tearing [Edited 1/27/05 17:08pm] It's a jungle out there.

There be some lengthy bastards there. Very simlar to mine. Your list falls somewhere between the one I made and the one that actually exists. I did debate for a while between "Thank You" and "Heartbreaker". I made the decision by flipping a coin. I also struggled with putting "The Rover" on there, because it does kick some serious ass. But I've never been overtly fond of "The Song Remains the Same." And I hate, hate, hate "No Quarter" and "Achilles Last Stand." [Edited 1/2/05 12:47pm] It's a jungle out there.

The playing is amazing but i don't find it immersive at all. I actually prefer Tea For One off Presence. Nice to see Sick Again making that tracklist. It's always been one of my faves.

The double remasters was a pretty great collection from about 1990. The boxed set was what got me into Led Zep. And of course every home should have a copy of their DVD as well

It took me a LONG time but now its by far one of my favorite Zep tunes. Acutally most of Presence didn't grab me until years after I bought the album. Song Remains the Same is good but not outstanding like MOST of their catalogue . No Quarter is a classic. JUst had to add my 2 cents.

If the song were instrumental, I would probably be digging it. The riff is great. But the lyrics are so over the top and ridiculous. Nerd rock. I'm down with intelligent lyrics (Costello, Dylan), but I draw the line at pretentious nerd rock. Same problem I have with "No Quarter." It'd probably be a great song, if Robert Plant would've written some better lyrics or just shut the hell up. And "Sick Again" is most definitely a jam. I think of it as a harder rocking cousin of the Rolling Stones' "Stray Cat Blues," which is another hell of a jam. groupie sex edit [Edited 1/3/05 4:42am] It's a jungle out there.

I didn't just type that out loud, did I? I think it's even less the whining than it is what he's whining about. If he's whining about his woman leaving him, or that fact that her soul was made in hell and she makes his life torturous - I'm fine with that. Have at it. But if he's whining about Atlas holding up the Earth, or about voyaging through some mythical kingdom with gnomes and dwarves - gag me with a spoon. I guess I'm just not into hearing Robert Plant give me the musical version of "Lord of the Rings." It's a jungle out there.

A. A lot of the live stuff is much better than the studio recordings IMO. So get yourself "How The West Was Won" for a start. And then the DVD. B. I love The Crunge. I used to hate it, and now I love it. I love the funky bass and guitar. It's not "essential", but I also left off a ton of others that I could have put on there. "The Crunge" just made the cut. Of course, this whole list could change next week. C. Yes, "Bron-Yr-Aur" is the little two minute acoustic number from PG. It's beautiful. D. Does it need to be in chronological order? E. You look rabid. "I saw a woman with major Hammer pants on the subway a few weeks ago and totally thought of you." - sextonseven

I love it's no frills attitude but the songs aren't that strong. It's their weakest album. However you would not believe how many Zep fans think it's their best, it's also Jimmy Pages favourite. Strange, the transcript I found only went to Scene 22. tA Tribal Disorder http://www.soundclick.com...rmusic.htm "Ya see, we're not interested in what you know...but what you are willing to learn. I wouldn't say it's one of the 36 essential Zeppelin songs. And is Bron-Yr-Aur that little 2 minute acoustic thing from "Physical Graffiti"? And why isn't it in chronological order? And why don't you want to pet me? Boy you're sure hard to please, aren't you? Yes, I am extremely hard to please. I do want to get "How the West" (I've been eyeballing it for a while), but I haven't really considered the DVD. I'd have to see somebody else's first. I see Zeppelin on VH1 Classic sometimes, and for some reason, I tend not to like them as much when I can see them. Go figure. And yes, it should be in chronological order. All anthologies should be. That's rule number one of anthology/greatest hits sets. That way you can hear the progression of the band/artist. I may look rabid, but you'd like it. It's a jungle out there.
