It's funny, because they didn't actually record in the same booth - Marvin liked to smoke weed while recording, and Diana was pregnant at the time and refused. A lot of the stuff was recorded separately as a result.

I still think a better vocal partner for him was Tammi Terrell, but Diana was a nice foil, and I think she was at her best vocally during this period (early 70's).

Marv doesn't even know how to beat around the botch esp when it comes to the 'Boss'(aka Miss Diane) the stories regarding that album's sessions are funny as it gets .

Thanks, Harle! I'll definitely have a look at this. There are so many damn hilarious stories of Motown recording sessions, I love 'em. Never read a full Gaye bio, too, so that's at the top of my list.

I like it too! Thinkin' about what each were accomplishing in their solo careers in that era, this collaboration is quite the treat.

Yes, Divided Soul is the book to pick up. I see that changed the cover.

actually this was the first Marvin Gaye album I bought at all. I was just getting into Diana (around the time when Upside down hit the charts), buying all of her older albums, and this was amongst them. unnecessary to mention, that soon after that I was working my way through the Marvin back catalouge as well
