And I really mean succesfull, I mean you can mention Paul Weller with the Style Council and The jam, but that was a small succes... Not solo.... in a band!!

I wonder....

I'll give the 1st one.... Paul McCartney in;
The Beatles

And in
the Wings

If he's confusing Daves Grohl and Navarro then I don't think he knows Pat Smear. I could be wrong of course, but I have a hunch...

I guess Robert Smith singing with The Glove doesn't count?

How about Siouxsie with her other band The Creatures? Their second album went to #197(?) in the U.S. Is that successful? smile

Scott Weiland from Stone Temple Pilots and Velvet Revolver. I read somewhere that Velvet Revolver sold over 2 million copies.

This doesn't count. Arcadia was Duran Duran's response to the Power Station, where half of Duran Duran had a major hit with another band. Arcadia was the remaining members trying to prove that they could do it too, since the other two were busy touring with Power Station.

Which reminds me:
Robert Palmer - solo, and Power Station.
George Michael - Wham, solo.
Sammy Haggar - solo, Van Halen
David Lee Roth - solo, Van Halen
Loser McUgly - Extreme, Van Halen

Neil Young - Crosby Stills Nash & Young, solo

Robert Palmer - Led Zeppelin, and solo.
Paul Rogers - Free, Bad Company, solo and The Firm
Sting - the Police, and solo

Michael Jackson - solo, the Jackson 5/Jacksons, the L.A. Boys Choir
Michael Hutchence - INXS, solo (posthumously) Max Q

Chris Cornell - Soundgarden, Audioslave

Chaka Khan - w/Rufus, and then solo

and on and on.

I forgot about Max Q. I haven't listened to that CD in years.

And the original post specifically asked for artists who were in two groups, not recording solo.

Oh, you're telling me WINGS was not PAUL MCCARTNEY and WINGS? Come on. But sure, you're right. I'll agree to the post and keep it within the lines. (but McCartney and Wings was NOT not a solo band w/backing twits.)

And, I would think that Sting was shooting for a band feel with his band, as is Eric Clapton. The band name sells it, but the artist isn't going out with pickup bands on each tour/album... so, I would argue, slyly, that while the lead singer's name is on the record, it's a branding issue.

And yeah, Robert Plant, sure, that's what I meant! Duh!!

some mo:
John Waite - The Babys and Bad English, (ignoring his solo career in the middle)

The dude from BRAD, SATCHEL and Pigeonhead. I don't even remember his name but the biggest "hit" was from Pigeonhead - where he sang, "I said hallelujah, to the 16th royal fence" or whatever.
