Aretha Franklin, "Rock Steady" for "I'm Housin'" by EPMD

Somebody already mentioned Herb Alpert's "Rise" for Biggie's "Hypnotize"

Now, some of y'all are just mentioning samples, not necessarily good ones lol Every song w/ a sample in it ain't necessarily good - what they do to it should flow well w/ the music, not sound like noise over it.

Also, I think it's only right to mention the samplee first razz

one of the worst uses of a sample...

though she has a great voice and has some good songs...

that song by Angie Stone, "No More Rain" or something that uses the ENTIRE Gladys Knight sample, "Neither One of Us"
...for that matter, if you're going to use a sample BE CREATIVE...either use a common sample in unique way (i.e. Dre's The Chronic using Parliament/Clinton samples) or use some obscure stuff or jazzy stuff (ATCQ or Gang Starr)

---ok...i'm done twocents

My favorite at the moment is Star by the Roots (Everybody is a star-Sly Stone), but i also rate Art of noise and Steinski for use of innovative sampling.

hey, i gotta question for you all....did wendy and lisa sample/loop the drums on Skeleton Key from another song? cause its sampled on Arrested Developments "Children Play With Earth" along with Eric Leed's horns and the girls arent given any credit.....nor is Eric for that matter..

I think that was Carla's drumming Arrested Development sampled, I think Wendy and Lisa only used samples on their remixes, I thought it was nice that they used it but unfortunately non crediting still happens

Yea but I really liked the Angie Stone sample of "Backstabbers" for "I Wish I Didn't Miss You." The lyrics of the song totally go with the background sample, it's a pretty awesome song I think..

Thriller81

I enjoyed what Johnny J did, he took a small section of Quincy Jones' "Body Heat", and made a loop, creating "How Do You Want It" for Tupac. In my opinion, the best use of a sample

My god, I agree completely. Wrote a completely new creation with those changes.

I also like the tiny snippet of Prince "Cindy C" on "A Watcher's Point of View".

Let's not forget the original:

The Sugarhill Gang's "Rapper's Delight" sample of "Good Times" by Chic

I know it's not obscure and it doesn't use the music in a different way, but it was incredibly influential.

Also, I think the song was very well suited to rapping over. They probably improved on the original, which is vital yet difficult for a cover/sample.

In You Me, The Vibe Electric, there is a sample of prince at the end of "sexy mf".. the little scream/yelp at the end when they say

Yo man
she came
where?
there..
Ewmpth... <= That part is sampled brilliantly in that song.. its all over the place
