Is the best use of a sample taking four-plus bars of popular music and looping it wholesale, though?

Not that I don't enjoy the songs you all have posted, but isn't it important to have an obscure source and/or at least a subtle use to qualify for "BEST" use?

why does it have to be an obscure source or subtle use that makes it qualify for "best use"? obscure and least subtle doesn't automatically make it a candidate for best use. i think that it has to be where it sounds and works so well that the whole song with the sampled track becomes an entity of its own and separate from original.

I want to try and name some rock songs that used actual samples.

The Verve "Bitter Sweet Symphony"
-Andrew Oldham Orchestral Stones Hits "The Last Time"

Radiohead "Idiotheque"
-Paul Lansky "Mild Und Leise"

hmmm Gonna need some help for more examples where musical phrases are sampled and not replayed.

I thought of a couple drum break uses:

Alanis Morissette "Thank U"
-Sly & The Family Stone "Sing A Simple Song" (drums)

Aimee Mann "That's Just What You Are"
-Lafayette Afro Rock Band "Hihache" (drums)

This a bit of an inside joke based on a running debate Cee and I have had about sampling in general.

I do agree with Cee 100% that "taking four-plus bars of popular music and looping it wholesale" probably shouldn't qualify as "best use".

To me, "the whole song with the sampled track becomes an entity of its own and separate from original" when the sample is used in such a way that it's difficult to determine what the original actually was. Then you know that this creation stands on its own as a unique work and not on the popularity of someone's past track.

An observation. Nikki D.'s Daddy's little girl (sampling DNA & Suzanne Vega "Toms diner") has been listed.
But DNA took Suzanne's orginal version of Tom's Diner (which was done a cappella), dropped a Soul II Soul groove sample under it (not sure what other samples were used) to create this DNA & Suzanne Vega version.
This is where things get crazy. Sampling samples of samples. I guess in this case it would be considered a remix? confuse

Btw, I really like the DNA featuring Suzanne Vega version of Tom's Diner. nod

OMG i feel like an Idoit cause i can't remember the orignal name of the song.

But "If" was a great use of a sample... cause the whole song wasn't the sample they added to it.

I like the old way JJ TL and JJ worked on an album... now it seems like they just still hooks.

Yup, big ol' drum loop. Those are classic hip-hop drums too. Great song.

It was a pretty big song for Aimee in 1994, and it was featured on the soundtrack for Melrose Place (actually a good listen).
