They did a big write up about this same predicament on Salon.com. I also like Jada Pinkett-Smith, and if you've seen her atrocious (probably the producers fault) acting on "A Different World" you'll see how much che's grown.

Seriously, they were great shows. This was when NBC ruled with good sitcoms such as Cheers, The Cosby Show, Night Court and the afore mentioned. Jeux Sans Frontiers

I know that "The Golden Girls" was definately on NBC but I keep thinking that "227" was on ABC. Was it? I love both shows but am not ready to buy them on DVD, though. Also, I've noticed that both shows came out on DVD recently and while "227" has a decent price of around $25 but the "Golden Girls" set was like $40! What's up with that?

You're right. It is said that "Lifetime" is white women's televison only...they really should consider the African American women's market. African American shows are really underapperciated more than ever now of days. It used to be that all the networks tried to aim at African Americans with comdies like "227", "Amen", "A Different World" and these shows would appeal to whites as well. About a decade back, it was up to Fox (remember "Martin", "Living Single", etc.) and then they all up gave up on that. And then it was WB, who were mocked for creating so many African American shows when they started. So what are their hit sticoms now? "Reba" and other shows with mostly white cast members. Now UPN has nothing but African American sitcoms and I think shows like "Girlfriends" and "The Parkers" (RIP) could have appealed to all Americans. TV is so segerated now, with only one niche channel that most African Americans and only African Americans watch...it says something about our culture. Also, I've noticed that classic African American sitcoms are mostly being issued through a series, prehaps Fox, which packages them all the same and with no special features BUT they are very well priced. "All In the Family" and other classics are also being released through this series. Gotta love the prices and let's face it. who needs special features? It takes enough time to watch the shows as is. Sometimes special features are intimidating becuase you feel you should watch them since you paid for them. [Edited 12/30/04 13:47pm]

Notice that the segeration of TV has happened recently, when we are yelling at liberal Hollywood and the media. In the eighties, all the networks featured African American and mutlicutural sitcoms. Sad! We really should get back to discussing the joy of "227"...or should we move this into the P&R forum. [Edited 12/30/04 13:55pm]
