someone who's a bit artsy-folksy, beatnik-ish, intellectual, coffee-house type...it's kind of a vague word, really, especially these days. anyone who doesn't live in a red state could be defined as a bohemian to some people.

That's pretty much how I see it, too.

Alana Davis
The girl screams "bohemian." From her acoustic-ladened music to her stripped down, façadeless appearence -- all-around free spirit. Plus, the girl's lived in NYC's Greenwich Village for years -- that alone makes her a de facto bohemian! She's an excellent singer/songwriter and can play one mean acoustic guitar live (barefooted, I might add). She's currently out on the west coast keeping things moving with her brand new imprint Tigress Records and a new album Surrender Dorothy in 2005.

Cree Summer
An artist of mixed heritage and various outlooks, Cree Summer is a bohemian through and through. She was born in California (bells and whistles) in 1969 (more bells and whistles). Her celebrity parents were so artsy-fartsy that they didn't want her growing up in Hollywood, so they moved her to (where else but) Red Pheasant, a Plains Cree reserve in Saskatchewan, and so Cree spent her first eight years there moving to Toronto when it was time to enter the fourth grade. Hanging out with Lenny Kravitz gives her even more bohemian points. She has this classic California bohemian artsy/spiritual/freespirited/laid-back way about her.

I'd have to agree with you here. Cree and Alana's projects were brilliant; too bad no one was listening.

ani's a good example of a bohemian. i think kathleen hanna is a good example of a boho chick by way of DIY punk rock ethics. definitely kimya dawson - she's as bohemian as they come. singer/songwriter/artist/handbag designer/babysitter. (if ya don't know who she is, go to www.kimyadawson.com)

Ehhh, I don't really see that. She's kinda more "neo-soul-ish" <-- yeah, I dislike that term, too. LOL.

Anyways she seems to "cool" to be bohemian. There's just a hint of agitation in most bohemians to me. That against the grain thing. Amel is chillout-ish.

Lilliquois Moon (f.k.a. Lisa Bonet)
Now, there's not a record to her name (unless they're hidden in some unreleased Romeo Blue/Lenny Kravitz sessions), but you can't have a "Bohemians" list without listing this former Huxtable sibling. Born in San Francisco (!!!) Married in 1987 (and divorced) Mr. Lenny "Let Love Rule" Kravitz, whose impulsive free spirit and bi-racial upbringing paralleled hers. Has the afro-boho dreads, the garb, she's in touch with her spiritual side. That same vibe even followed her character "Denise" on "The Cosby Show" and "A Different World." Friends with Cree Summer. Changed her name to Liliquois Moon (and I still think Meshell Ndegeocello's Comfort Woman track of the same name is a thinly-veiled reference to this woman).

I'll give you that. As funky as he is with the Chili Peppers, his solo stuff is much more artsy and defintely out there.

Liliquoi Moon Lyrics

mama never cared much ’bout dreams
or Love
she said it reminded her of my daddy
my daddy
he Loved to fly
he’d say

death will come fast
i wanna be free
and closer to the sky
Love grows cold,
lonely and tired
on the wings of angels
i want to fly

daddy’s just the blood in my veins
shadows in my mind
as i’d watch my mama drown in her tears
he’d say

“i can’t promise you Love
and i can’t promise you me”
in my heart of hearts
i yearn to fly

and death will come fast
i wanna be free
and closer to sky
Love grows cold,
lonely and tired
on the wings of angels
i want to fly
i want to fly
i yearn to fly

and death will come fast
death will come fast
i yearn to fly
