Madeleine Peyroux My hubs gave me Madeleine Peyroux's Careless Love cd for Christmas, and it is absolutely WONDERFUL!! I had NEVER heard of her before, but he had heard a few tracks on a local radio station here and thought that I might like her.
She is jazz artist, and her voice and style remind me A LOT of Billie Holiday's. Here's a link to Madeleine's website if any of you are interested in reading about her or listening to some clips from Careless Love: http://www.madeleinepeyro...=audio.php If you are a fan of Billie Holiday or jazz, you won't be disappointed

bump
Does anyone one want to give this girl a listen? I posted the link on three message boards, and NO ONE has responded. I thought for SURE someone on this site would have known her or at least listened to some clips on the link. Ya'll are usually so receptive to different types of music. Madeleine was #3 on the Billboard jazz charts. She's really good. [Edited 1/3/05 18:41pm]

She sounds A LOT like Billie Holliday. Her music and voice are very MELLOW. She's a jazz artist, so maybe her music is not everyone's cup of tea. But I was just so blown away by her CD. Here in Austin (Texas), KGSR, a progressive radio station, has been playing her music from time to time. I heard a couple of cuts on this station but didn't make the connection until my hubs gave me the cd. It's really good.

I believe there is one full song on her site available for downloading. I would say that maybe she has a Norah Jones quality, but an earthier sound. Plus, Madeleine plays guitar and to me has a slight "New Orleans" jazz feel to her music, but it's not exactly New Orleans jazz. Her music is very "mellow," but like I said in more of a Billie Holiday way. HOWEVER, the difference is that Madeleine isn't singing the blues. In fact one of her "hits" her in Austin is a cover of Bob Dylan's "You're Gonna Make Me Lonely When You Go." The arrangement is nearly unrecognizable. I mean, I liked Dylan's folk version, but Madeleine's is really a jazz treatment of the song. I'm kind of promoting her coz she is a "new" artist, so to speak. I think this current cd, Careless Love is really good and "refreshing." However, my husband said the she had an album a while back that didn't do very well. I thought you all would like her coz out of the other message boards that I've read, you guys seem to have eclectic tastes in music.

I heard one of the tracks off Madeleine's new album a few months ago on a New Jersey radio station, and I was absolutely blown away. I will be checking out this new release soon...
BTW, Madeleine's new album is produced by Larry Klein (Joni Mitchell's ex).

Lizz Wright. I never heard of her either until I took your suggestion about giving her a chance. She is GREAT! I tried to listen to some clips just to get an idea of her sound on her website, but for some reason, I couldn't find any. So I got on AOL and found some from her cd Salt. Very nice... It's not the same style of jazz as Madeleine's: Lizz has a strong, soulful voice with more of a contemporary jazz feel. Love it. I'm not sure if the link will work, but I'm going to post it anyway: http://music.channel.aol....mid=638293 Here's the complete link to Lizz's website: http://www.lizzwright.net/
