Didn't Sony like release all of EWF's Greatest Hits on 4 cd's like 3 months ago?Plus the only good GH set worth buying is the GH set from 1998.

I'm talking "best of," "greatest hits," "number ones," etc. Who's got way too many of them?

One of my favorites, Donna Summer, has at least 8 major collections to her name (not including live releases), and a lot of these include the same shit!:

On the Radio (1978)
Walk Away (1980)
The Dance Collection (1987)
Donna Summer Anthology (1993)
Endless Summer (1995)
Greatest Hits (1998)
Millenium Collection: The Best of Donna Summer (2003)
Ultimate Collection (2003)

And there's yet another Donna Summer compilation coming out in January. It's a 2-CD set called "Donna Summer Gold".This is ridiculous.

Do you know what the tracklisting is?

I'm going to have to buy it for some of the 7'' edits, which are hard to get outside of vinyl. This is the first time many of Donna's 7'' versions are getting released on CD - they always reedit them for her compilations, sometimes with odd results.

I've been looking for that version of Heaven Knows on CD for a while....and it ain't on here sad I love that song to death.

I have a pretty good sounding mp3 version of a 6:41 extended version of the song - I can upload it to yousendit.com if you'd like to hear it. I'm not sure if that's the one you're looking for.

For artists I'm obsessed with (like Donna), I'm an idiot and I'll buy whatever compilation they put out if it's got "new remastered sound!" or "unreleased edit!", etc etc.

Plus this has a remastered version of Dinner With Gershwin.

Aerosmith are the most guilty. I think they've had more GH/live albums than studio albums and none of them have managed to be comprehensive. Amazingly one band who haven't had one GH album and have been going 30 years are ACDC!

I've also found AC/DC lack of best of/greatest hits collection as a dissapointment since they are long overdue for a good one but then again their old albums still sell and I think they have started reissuing them. Once they release a good hits/best of collection it will surely be a big deal since they waited so damn long. They're not dumb business men!

Ike & Tina, and hardly any of them are worth having as far as being good, career-arching retrospectives. "Proud Mary: The Best Of..." comes as close as I can find online.

With the number of useless compilations put out by Cher's various labels, you'd think that at last one of them would contain a few songs from her 1975-1977 output. sure, that stuff was a terrible flop, but it's not even on CD and apparently Stars is one of her best. and i'm sure there are some Allman fans that would pick up the Allman & Woman album. weird that it took until 2003 (and the import version at that) to actually get a difinitive career-spanning hits package out there for her. and even with that one, you need 2001's "Essential Cher" to fill in the gaps from the old stuff.

Elvis has way too many. the mind boggles. fortunately, a dear, dear friend took note when i was getting into Elvis and got the 3 5-disc box sets covering the 50's, 60's and 70's. just the 2-disc stuff from the movies to go! woot!

Bowie has had a lot of them as well, though only a few are available on CD, so his catalog doesn't appear to have been mined quite as much as it actually has. but when he left RCA (prior, even), there were dozens of them coming out for years.

I'm not really satisfied with Elton John's either. Greatest Hits I & II are perfect best-of collections. however, Greatest Hits III (replaced by Greatest Hits 1976-1986) really kind of sucked in both incarnations. and the one that came out in 2002 is pretty much a waste. everything on disc 1 is on the original GH's (and if anyone had 1 or 2 Elton John albums, it'd be those), which leaves disc 2 to cover about 25 years worth of hits. i understand why it's set up the way that it is (to get people to actually buy it for the old songs they like), but i would like to see artists and labels work at putting out something that at least appears on the surface to be complete. or a reason for someone who's already got all the albums and various compilations to buy it. that goes for all artists, really.

Cher's "Stars" is an awesome album as is the very underrated follow up "I'd Rather Believe In You". You're right that "The Very Best Of Cher" was the closet thing to career spanner but I noticed you said that "Essentail Cher" (which is great and includes some great lesser known gems like "Rudy", "Young And Pretty" and "Bad Love") fills everything in? Well, I think in the UK they released a two disc edition of the album that fills in most of those gaps nicely. It defeinately looks like the "Essentail Collection" was taken into consideration since it's only the second Cher CD I've seen to feature "Bad Love".

yeah, the 2-CD VBOC is very nice, and very close to being complete. but i feel like it leans a little too heavily on the 1987+ stuff. I made my own chronological set drawing from VBOC and "Essential". first disc is 1965-1985, and the second is 1985-2005 (or will be when her new album comes out).

Look at the three that are highlighted! That is just a good damn shame! Also, there are various verisons of "Hits+". I only have "Greatest Hits" with the "Non-Stop History 51" as a bonus disk and a nicely priced import of "Hits+" but plan on getting "Ulitmate Kylie" just for the new songs.

Earth,Wind and Fire is my favorite band, but they have way too many hits compilations! It seems like, every few months, their old label (Sony/Columbia) issues yet another greatest hits set.In addition, there are several sets that focus primarily on their slow love songs. How many times can a record company re-package and re-sell what's already been sold many times before?

Didn't Sony like release all of EWF's Greatest Hits on 4 cd's like 3 months ago?Plus the only good GH set worth buying is the GH set from 1998.

I agree, the 1998 "Greatest Hits" CD is perfect. For the casual fan who only wants one disc,it's all they would ever need.

I guess I won't be spending my money on that set! It's nothing that I don't already have,in some form or another.Last year,I foolishly bought the 3-CD "Ultimate Collection" and I was really disappointed. The edits on many songs are clumsy and messy ("Back In Love Again" fades out during the instrumental segment, totally ignoring the final chorus!),and the whole set seems hastily thrown together. This set appears to be a vast improvement.
