I can't stand Michael McDonald's voice

I'm sorry, I can't. It tried tolerating it, but it's just too whiny and corny. I was just listening to one of his songs here in this cafe, and it just fucking annoyed me. disbelief

music I keep forgettin we're not in love anymore...I keep forgettin things will never be the same again...I keep forgettin how you made that so clear...
I keep forgettin every time that you are near
music I like his voice. giggle Why him though? He just doesn't seem like the type that would get under people's skin. He should've left the Motown classics alone though.

That song is hot, but it's his voice that gets in the way. It's just annoying. headache

He came from somewhere back in her long ago
The sentimental fool don’t see
Tryin’ hard to recreate
What had yet to be created once in her life

She musters a smile
For his nostalgic tale
Never coming near what he wanted to say
Only to realize
It never really was

She had a place in his life
He never made her think twice
As he rises to her apology
Anybody else would surely know
He’s watching her go

But what a fool believes he sees
No wise man has the power to reason away
What seems to be
Is always better than nothing
And nothing at all keeps sending him...

Somewhere back in her long ago
Where he can still believe there’s a place in her life
Someday, somewhere, she will return

She had a place in his life
He never made her think twice
As he rises to her apology
Anybody else would surely know
He’s watching her go

But what a fool believes he sees
No wise man has the power to reason away
What seems to be
Is always better than nothing
There’s nothing at all
But what a fool believes he sees...

That's just my opinion. If you like him, that's fine.

He just ain't no Boy George to me. wink

Pretty distinctive, though. I think it works well as Steely Dan backup.
And not many have been able to cross over like he did.

I can't stand looking at Boy George's recent makeup trend/disaster.

I've always liked his voice, although I admit I can't understand a GOTTdamn word he's sayin...
someone once remarked that when you listen to a Doobie Brothers record, you can actually HEAR their beards...that's what I think of when I hear Ol Mike singin'... I am a fan, though...at least when he's doin' his own stuff, not Motown covers...

I understand what you mean but he's still one soulful white dude.

I don't have a problem with his voice.

In terms of the Doobies, outside of Takin' It To The Streets
and It Keeps You Running he's probably does some of his best work here...

He's at his worst during duets with real R&B singers...

On My Own - Patti LaBelle
Ever Changing Times - Aretha Franklin

I wasn't downing the songs.
My comment was about his part in the songs.

It's when he's got to ad lib against James, Patti and Aretha is where the trouble starts. wink

Same here. Well, except Ever Changing Times. What a piece of schmaltzy crap. It does get annoying that he constantly feels (felt?) that he needed to prove how down he was with the sound. "See how many R&B performers I've worked with?"

Heyyy, I kinda dig MMcD's vocals. I love "Yah Mo Be There (with James Ingram," "On My Own (with Patti LaBelle)" and the very best of the lot: "Shine Sweet Freedom"!

I'm pretty sure these songs have been played at every Sizzler restaurant in America ad nauseam, but they're still loved by me. thumbs up!

Some of y'all crazy. I saw Michael McDonald at the Ryman in January and it was one of the best concerts I have ever seen. He's done some schlock, but so has virtually every other great pop music singer. His voice is soulful and distinctive.

I love his voice. I agree with a few of the other comments, his voice is very distinctive and stands out. I love "This Is It" by Kenny Loggins featuring Michael McDonald, I could'nt imagine anybody else singing his part on that record.

I don't have a problem with it at all.

My sister once noticed how he always looks like he's about to eat the microphone, he puts his mouth so close to it when he sings. smile

Yeah, his voice is distinctive sounding, that's for sure--But so is the death rattle.

Last year for Christmas, my boss gave me his 'Motown' record (why??).

I still haven't taken the shrink wrap off of it. Not really sure what to do with it.
