I liked the original Rod Stewart version from 1982.

Burt Bacharach and Carole Bayer Sager wrote this song awhile ago, and Rod Stewart originally recorded it for the soundtrack of the movie "Night Shift" back in '82. I loved that version . I wasn't so hot about the all-star remake done several years later, With Stevie, Dionne, and friends...

Burt is God.

Still waiting for his collaborations with Dr Dre to surface.

i never knew it was a remake. maybe it has hope afterall. but since i was traumatized by it back in the day i don't have the strength to listen to the orginal.

"Hated it!"

Whatever year that song came out... I heard way way too much of it (still remember all the words). And it was too cheesy cheese even for me at the time (and I was born in `80).

When was this again?

Look at Gladys' hair. Isn't it beautiful? Girl has always had impeccable hair.

Rod Stewarts original version of this song is way better. Not nearly as pretentious either.

sure. there was "What's Going On" after 9/11 and about 5 other less exposed all-star tribute songs as well (including the aborted MJ one).

plus they've just re-recorded and released a 20th anniversary "Do They Know It's Christmas" in the UK. and jermaine Dupri is planning to do an anniversary version of "We Are The World"

the only one of those celebrity charity songs i ever thought was cool was the "sun city" song - at least that one was funky.

I like the vocals and the assemblage of stars, but it's pretty saccharin.

That doesn't mean I won't belt it out at full-blast in a karaoke bar. giggle

lol You know, I had the same picture in my head and was saying the same phrase...."Hated it!" lol

I'll never forget that damned song. I graduated High School in 1985 and when I graduated from a small business college in 1986, they had us all standing up together singing with that song. I was kinda like Prince on the "American Music Awards" in 1995 when he was forced to stand on the stage while they sang "We Are The World". He sucked on a lollipop....I lipsynced and rolled my eyes. lol

Over here in Singapore, the stupid Idol franchise hit our shores in June this year.

The top 12 finalists of Singapore Idol did a remake of this song and have released it as a single here...i kinda like it better than the original...but still.....

...can't stand it.
