Modest Mouse Live

Has anyone around her seen Modest Mouse perform live?

I missed their last show as it sold-out before I got tix. Well, they are coming back to First Avenue in February and I'm considering going.

Problem is, their SNL performances scurred me a bit. If anyone has any input I'd love it. I'm rather broke right now and don't wanna drop some ca$h on a bummer show...

Anxiety

after that SNL performance, i'd be really hesitant about seeing them live. of course, scissor sisters were no great shakes on SNL either, but at least i could see how they could potentially be really fun live (which they indeed are, from all i hear). modest mouse just looked miserable all around.

yeah, I know....I did think MUSICALLY (not vocally) that "ocean breathes salty" sounded good....I dunno though....

i guess they sounded at least passable, though i wasn't really thrilled with the vocals (okay, i was mildly revolted by the vocals, but i'm trying to be kind). i have a hard time getting into a show when the band doesn't have much stage presence, no matter how much i like their music. i think the only band without stage presence that i've ever gotten into at a live show has been stereolab. once i got over how pretty laeticia sadler was, there wasn't a whole lot left to take in other than the music, which thankfully was absolutely gorgeous. so what the hell, i just found a safe corner and shut my eyes through most of the show. smile

they are hit and miss live, if you can get into the trance rock you should be ok, it may sound weak at times but ultimately they arent the best live band, or studio band for that matter.

When I was in Oberlin they were the cool thing to listen too, so I got burned out real fast on them shrug

Well, if *I* were you, cutie pie, I wouldn't be missing that show - but I can't stop spinning the copy of The Moon and Antarctica I picked up a couple months ago for like $6 at Best Buy. The funny thing is, they tacked on 4 or 5 live studio tracks at the end, and they sound just GORRRRR-jiss. Especially 3rd Rock, man what a beautiful song.

My boyfriend fucking hates it all though, and he's got good taste in music. He just can't handle the singing, but eh, I dunno. I guess I never mind when I feel like someone without an innate ability to sing is able to do it anyway and pull it off. Of course, like I said, my boyfriend doesn't think that he pulls it off, so to each their own.

Now I gotta see if they're playing anywhere near my lil' burn (yeah right).

Endorphin, I'm calling you this week, I PROMISE. Things have been crazy but are going REAL well right now, can't wait to tell you all about it. smile

Happy Holidays y'all!
