Kick off the covers... ...that musically expand on the originals.
Choices must be new musical arrangements. NO RAP OVER SAMPLES. A few examples: All Along The Watchtower (Bob Dylan) - Jimi Hendrix *Watermelon Man (Mongo Sanatmaria) - Headhunters *This is really Herbie Hancock covering Herbie covering Herbie. One of the orginal pieces Herbie wrote for his debut album as a leader, Takin' Off. It didn't become a popular hit until Mongo Santamaria covered it in '63. Herbie rearranged it for the Headhunters release. Norwegian Wood (Beatles) - Allan Holdsworth A Little Help From My Friends (Beatles) - Joe Cocker Proud Mary (Creedence Clearwater Revival) - Tina Turner tA Tribal Disorder http://www.soundclick.com...rmusic.htm "Ya see, we're not interested in what you know...but what you are willing to learn. While Im at it I might as well mention Jimi Hendrix's Monterey performance of Dylan's "Like A Rolling Stone"...Some will argue , but I prefer Jimi's... "...all you need ...is justa touch...of mojo hand....."

Also : Most of Led Zeppelin's earlier Albums contain so many Blues Covers that were famously uncredited...Their approach to them musically however (HARD & LOUD) is what makes them exciting.... "...all you need ...is justa touch...of mojo hand....."

I hate the Gladys Knight version of "I Heard It Through The Grapevine". The voodoo-like arrangements on Mavin's version are incredible. Although it is unknown which was recorded virst, the Gladys version was released first.

The interpretation and especially the rhythm guitar playing (something he doesn't get enough credit for). tA Tribal Disorder http://www.soundclick.com...rmusic.htm "Ya see, we're not interested in what you know...but what you are willing to learn. Don't forget about The Specials' version of Dylan's "Maggies Farm".
And also.. The Clash - I Fought The Law The Cure - Foxy Lady Red Hot Chili Peppers - Subterranean Homesick Blues Scissor Sisters - Comfortably Numb - I'm sorry, but that song is a guilty pleasure. Earth Wind & Fire - Where Have All The Flowers Gone The Smiths - Marie's The Name (The Latest Flame) The Specials also did this strange version of 96 Tears. NEW WAVE FOREVER: SLAVE TO THE WAVE FROM THE CRADLE TO THE GRAVE.

Quincy Jones's version of Herbie Hancock's "(Tell me A)Bedtime Story" (this is interesting, because Herbie is also on Quincy's remake, but I think Quincy's version greatly expands on the original...)
Luther Vandross's version of Burt Bacharach's Songs, A House Is Not A Home and Anyone Who Had A Heart James Taylor's version Of Marvin Gaye's "How Sweet It Is(To Be Loved By You)"....Marvin actually really liked this version. He loved James Taylor's voice and dug the new chords.... Kenny Rankin's version of the Beatles' "Blackbird"...Paul McCartney once told him, "I wish we had done it That way..." Isley Brothers' version of Seals and Crofts' "Summer Breeze" George Benson's version of Bobby Womack's "Breezin'"...Bobby originally wrote this instrumental for guitarist Gabor Szabo... Benson later did his version , and of course, it became a Classic! The Free Design's version of The Doors' "Light My Fire"-- a slowed down, darker, jazzier, More Psychedelic version, if you can imagine that... Jaco Pastorius's version of 3 Views Of A Secret...Jaco covering Jaco--Originally done with Weather Report on the album Night Passage, theirs was like a watercolor version, with Wayne Shorter skating around the Melody...Jaco's later version on his album, Word of Mouth is fully fleshed out and expanded, with full orchestra....really the Definitve version... Cassandra Wilson's version of Robert Johnson's "Come On In My Kitchen"--Inventive new arrangement with Brandon Ross... Everything But The Girl's version of Captain Beefheart(!)'s "My Head is My Only House(Unless it Rains)"---they actually manage to make Captain Beefheart sound beautiful if you can imagine such a thing... ... I Can't Make U Love Me--Prince. I don't really like this, as I was completely sick of the song by 1996, but he does reinvent the song musically without changing the tempo or melody (or even the key, I think) very much.
Got To get You Into My Life--EWF. Much better than the original (though i gotta give Paul credit for writing a great song). Here Comes the Sun--George Benson. I don't love this like the original, but the difference in arrangement is inspired. Indeed he was heavily inspired by the Abbey Road album as he did a whole cover album within months of the original's release! What's Goin On--Quincy Jones. Again very different, but not quite as good as the original, unless you like elevator music. Check this song out at:
