Exile On Main Street- Rolling Stones I've never been a Rolling Stone fan or listener, but I just want to know if Exile On Main Street is the first and only album I should buy from the Rolling Stones? Check me out and add me on:

No. It's way overrated. Any of their mid-era albums is worth a listen, late 60's thru to early 70's, just don't pin all your hopes on Exile..... [Edited 12/20/04 9:36am]

No. It's pretty dense. I'd say, first go with other albums from their "peak": Beggars Banquet, Let it Bleed (my favorite), Sticky Fingers (most critics favorite); absorb those for a while, then go for Exile.
Then you can work backward (best) and/or forward (OK, as well) thru their catalog. *****************************************

If you're new to the Stones game you might start here...
...Forty Licks (most bang for the buck in terms of hits over the course of their career.) For a single album, a rough choice, i'd go with... ...Let It Bleed (the last album that includes a bit of Brian Jones) Merry Clayton's background vocals on Gimme Shelter alone are worth the price of admission. I'm sure there'll be some differing opinions tA Tribal Disorder http://www.soundclick.com...rmusic.htm "Ya see, we're not interested in what you know...but what you are willing to learn. Buy Beggars Banquet first.
Then Let It Bleed. Then Sticky Fingers. If you dig all those THEN go for Exile. Over the years Exile has become my favorite Stones album but it took awhile to really sink in.

Then I bought Let It Bleed (my fave by them too)... Then I bought 40 Licks... Then I went through the catalogue & only added Beggars Banquet to my small Stones collection (Sticky Fingers & others went back to the store)... These 3 albums & a few individual songs (Moonlight Mile, Can You Hear Me Knockin') are the only things I'll ever need by the Stones
