This is a good comparison because I consider both to be pop records and not the best work of either artist. Thriller was better and will always be a better pop record than 1999. Can anyone listen to delirious and tell me that it doesn't sound dated. Thriller is a better listen cover to cover, every track is great and the production value is better than 99. Vocally and lyrically (save for Free, my fav P song), prince had done better work especially on Controversy. Thriller is a more polished product and couple that with the videos it can’t be beat.

Plus it has Paul McCartney.

1999 is a classic album PERIOD, in any time period. Thriller is now dated and somewhat comical now, only a hand full of those songs have stood the test of time. Please tell me that know one still listens to the track Thriller unless it's Halloween and you're at a party and have no choice.

Off the Wall on the other hand.....CLASSIC!!!!!

'Thriller' is one of the classic albums of all time, however, with that said, I'd choose 1999 over it any day. While Thriller was groundbreaking in too many ways to mention, 1999 was the more experimental, artistically challenging album.

I'm tired of these Prince/MJ threads, though. MJ is definitely not one of my favorite artists, and other than co-existing in the same time period, I don't really draw too many parallels between the two. Prince is truly an artist; he challenged the world from a musical standpoint. MJ (and Madonna) both challenged the world, also, but moreso from a social platform. shrug

I don't think 1999 is any less dated than Thriller. Lots and lots and lots of synch. It's very indicative of its time period. I love them both because they sound very much of that period, but they've both stood the test of time.

"1999" by a landslide!!

But let's make it fun...

Track 1: "1999" over "Wanna Be Startin' Something"

Track 2: "Little Red Corvette" over "Baby Be Mine"

Track 3: "Delirious" over "The Girl Is Mine"

Track 4: "Let's Pretend.." over "Thriller"

Track 5: "D.M.S.R." over "Beat It"

Track 6: "Billie Jean" over "Automatic"

Track 7: "Something In The Water..." tie "Human Nature"

Track 8: "P.Y.T." beats "Free" and "All The Critics", but gets its ass stomped by "Lady Cab Driver"

Closing Track: Gotta pick "Lady In My Life" over "International Lover, but ONLY because it's the last true romantic ballad MJ released and "International Lover" is a re-write of "Do Me, Baby"

You just compared the order of the tracks as opposed to pairing up tracks with similar sound
How silly

1. I can do what the fuck I want 2 do.

2. There are no similar sounds. Thriller is more organic pop/soul and 1999 is more synth/ drum machine funk/new wave.

3. If it's that important to you to try to compare the sounds then knock yourself out.

4. Have a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.
I'm sick and tired of the Prince fans being sick and tired of the Prince fans that are sick and tired!

So you really think that PYT or Wanna Be Startin Something could fill a dance floor like Little Red Corvette or DMSR could today??? 1999 trancends any time period, any of the tunes could come out today and still sound fresh, Beat It is so tired and is just not a song you could pump out of the car stereo.

Wanna Be Startin Something is one of THE best dance tunes ever. Little Red Corvette isn't a dance tune at all.

I still hear it played at bars and it still gets people out there. Plus there's a bar out here that plays Let's Pretend We're Married and the floor is PACKED. If I heard the intro to Beat It I'd probably bust out laughing.

One of the best dance tunes???? lol I would be chanting " ma ma se,Ma ma sa, ma ma coo sa" right off the floor. The Off the Wall album is FAR better and still sounds awesome, Thriller is DATED and stale now.

Thriller sounds like he was happy making the album. 1999 while its one of his best, is dark and scary at times, though much more experimental, thoughtful and musically over Thriller...

BUT my vote goes to Thriller.

I can do without All The Critics, International Lover, Delerious, and Lets Pretend Were Married

Billie Jean is played out
Beat It is played out, but overall, I can listen to the tracks without having to feel depressed by "Something In The Water" "Free" and "Automatic" as they are dark and eerie (but still funky dont get me wrong..just a tad bit dreary to listen to over and over).
Straight Jacket Funk Affair
Album plays and love for vinyl records.

Rhastus

in 1983 is when I really started getting into music. I got a boom box and the thriller tape and I played the crap out of it. In 84 I got Purple Rain and I never played thriller again and I think 1999 is better that purple rain so my choice is 1999

Oh please, you're telling me the intro to Beat it is cheesier than the intro to 1999, Delirious, Let's Pretend We're Married or ANY tune from 1999? The only reason Thriller might sound somewhat dated (which I disagree with) is because it's BEEN PLAYED MORE than 1999. I'm a bigger fan of Prince than MJ, but not a bigger fan of 1999 over Thriller. In my experience, I've heard tunes from Thriller played more often these days than I've ever heard the songs from 1999.

I love both albums but I have to go with 1999. 1999 still sounds fresh and funky while Thriller does sound dated but it's still got some funk in it before Michael went completely pop. Tough choice.
I'm not a fan of "old Prince". I'm not a fan of "new Prince". I'm just a fan of Prince. Simple as that

You people drive me CRAZY!!!

If I have to choose then I'll go with "1999" but honestly why would you? They're both classic albums and SOOO different. I choose "1999" for inventiveness, but who didn't love "Thriller". Still Michael's second best album.

I don't hang out at clubs, I find them tedious and stupid and I HATE HATE HATE modern dance music. My music taste is decidedly retro and I've resigned myself to the fact that most clubs aren't going to play the kind of retro dance music I like. The closest to something I would enjoy is the occasional "80s Night" and when I've gone to those A. They play WAY more Michael jackson then prince and B. play plenty of songs that are cheesier than anything either MJ or P ever did.

Besides which who gives a shit about what the standard for dance music is these days, it all sucks. "Yeah" by Usher, puh-lease ill

I've started to develop more of an appreciation for techno, but HOUSE is another story. I just personally think that music specifically geared towards the clubs has been one of the worst trends in popular music. First you had funk, then it became white and commercialized as disco, which became simulated on synthesizers and drum machines and we had dance pop, then it became entirely electronic and became house having been completely enervated of it's grit, it's earthiness and it's soul.

What? What choo talkin' 'bout, Willis?! Both disco AND house music are based in soul music, and white disco acts were probably in the minority. I dunno what kinda house and disco you been listening to, but it isn't the real stuff. wink
