All in all not a bad group.
The O'Jays are quite deserving as one of the premiere male R&B vocal groups. The Pretenders have shown that it's possible to have a female (Chrissie Hynde), with a distinctive voice, front a rock group (with good songs) and not have to appear on stage half naked to be successful. Hopefully the Buddy Guy selection will make people dig into his early catalogue (Chess, Vanguard), prior to his recent marketing as a rock star. Most notably his collaborations with Junior Wells and especially a live Vanguard release called This Is Buddy Guy. I'm glad he's finally getting more widespread recognition. It's just that the older material gives you a better understanding of why guitarists like Hendrix, Clapton and others have mentioned him as an influence. tA Tribal Disorder http://www.soundclick.com...rmusic.htm "Ya see, we're not interested in what you know...but what you are willing to learn. Black Sabbath is still not on the list?
Maybe THIS is where Rolling Stone builds its lists from, what a joke.

I'm happy with the inductees, but I dunno - I think both Conway Twitty and Grandmaster Flash were worthy nominees Perhaps another year. I'd have been throwing things at my monitor if J. Geils made it!

While I like the Pretenders (especially their earlier records), Chrissie Hynde sold sex as much as the next pop tart. She may have worked a different side of the street, but she was still selling.

I don't know enough to disagree, but seeing that sex is "rock and roll" (the latter being a colloquialism for the former) every rock musician sells it. Yes Chrissie sold it. I never said she didn't. My point was that Chrissie had enough writing savvy to do it at least 90% lyrically. From a cerebral "side of the street" as opposed to the hooker on the corner side if you will. It's great to see The O'Jays get into the Rock Hall Of Fame. They have recorded some of the best soul music of all-time.Their 70s output is simply amazing.
Buddy Guy deserves this honor as well. He's a blues legend.Currently,he's working on a new album that is being produced by his pal Carlos Santana. Can't wait to hear it!

From a cerebral "side of the street" What's cerebral about leather pants? Chrissie may not have been baring as much skin as some of today's female pop stars, but she was certainly selling sex (not that you'll ever get her to admit to that). 90% lyrically? I would disagree.

For some reason you appear to be hell-bent on turning my statement, "and not have to appear on stage half naked to be successful" into a "Chrissie sold sex" debate. I've already admitted that a major component of Rock and Roll is sex. However when I think of The Pretenders in general and Chrissie Hynde in particular, MY 1st impression is not sex. It's her voice and songs. This may have to do with the fact that I never found her to be sexy in the first place. "What's cerebral about leather pants?" Nothing. Which raises the question, what's sexual about a pair of leather pants? On that note, i'll end this by having you envision a present day Ann Wilson (or Patti Smith for that matter) and then tell me that the mere act of either of them putting on a pair of leather pants makes them sexy. It might for you, and that's OK. It just wouldn't do it for me. From my perspective, hearing Chrissie sing the lyric... I was a good time. Yeah. I got pretty good At changing tires upstairs, bro. I shot my mouth off and you showed me what that hole was for. ...is more of a turn-on to me than seeing her in a pair of leather pants...or "half naked". Under the guidelines of Robert's Rules of Order, we hereby agree to disagree. tA Tribal Disorder http://www.soundclick.com...rmusic.htm "Ya see, we're not interested in what you know...but what you are willing to learn. I am so happy for the O'Jays I could scream. Percy Sledge was a suprise and so was Buddy Guy, either though he is a guitar god.

I'm not "hell-bent" on anything. You implied that her success had nothing to do with sex; I disagreed. However when I think of The Pretenders in general and Chrissie Hynde in particular, MY 1st impression is not sex.
It's her voice and songs. This may have to do with the fact that I never found her to be sexy in the first place. If I said, "However, when I think of Madonna, MY 1st impression is not sex; it's her voice and songs. This may have to do with the fact that I never found her sexy in the first place.", would that mean that sex appeal plays no part in her success? And, incidentally, Chrissie (an outspoken basher of women who use sex to sell their music) has been a vocal supporter of her buddy Ms. Ciccone. I love some of Chrissie's work, but she is a first-class hypocrite. "What's cerebral about leather pants?" Nothing.
Which raises the question, what's sexual about a pair of leather pants? I dunno: what's sexual about baring skin? "Sexy" is in the eye of the beholder, but I would have no problem saying that if either of them put on a pair of tight, leather pants, it would be with the intention of "sexing-up" their image.
So, sexual imagery in lyrics somehow has more integrity than sexual imagery in dress?

We obviously are never going to connect on this subject. If I implied anything, it was that her success had more to do with her voice and songs than any particular image. Sexual or otherwise. tA Tribal Disorder http://www.soundclick.com...rmusic.htm "Ya see, we're not interested in what you know...but what you are willing to learn. C'mon y'all."

The O'Jays Percy Sledge The Pretenders Buddy Guy I am pleasantly surprised that the O'Jays got in. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/6705438/ Very nice. Although it would've been nice to see more Punk/New Wave acts on the roster. U2 and The Pretenders are good in itself though. But what about the Sex Pistols or The Cure? I figured U2 would make it in and they deserve it but it's really nice to hear that The O'Jays made it in. They made some classics and it's long overdue for them to get their props. I'm not a fan of "old Prince". I'm not a fan of "new Prince". I'm just a fan of Prince. Simple as that

don't get me wrong, i really love the pretenders. i saw them live several times. their first album is brilliant, but their overall catalog is too weak for me to support their induction. ------------------------------------------------

I'm sure their induction has more to do with their impact on rock n roll, particularly Chrissie Hynde's influence on the women performers that followed them. I like them a good deal, and I'm glad to see them inducted!

I hope Buddy Guy is inducted. He deserves the recognition of being the catalyst for every electric blues artist that's crunched out sound with extra soul in the generations after his own. ~PClinuxOS~ I've been here longer than I care to remember, ... I drop in from time to time, ...
