Greatest Non death tragedy in Rock?

Now of course there are plenty of young, untimely deaths in the history of rock, but has anybody considered tragedies in rock that didn't result in death? My two pics are Curtis Mayfield's paralysis and Sly Stone's disillusion, addiction, artistic decline and ultimate disappearance.

Whitney and Mariah morph into an addict and a childlike bimbo playing dressup in her hooker mother's closet, respectively.

Yeah I must admitt that's fucking hilarious falloff

In any case, other things that might not be "tragedies" per se are the extents to which a lot of old veterans have sold out ala Macca, Clapton, Sting, Santana and others.

Btw voices, good choice on Mariah. Glitter in and of itself is also quite a tragedy lol

Prince changing his style in 1985.

The fall of Rick James due to drugs.

Janet Jackson selling out to current trends after her "Rhythm Nation" album.

Michael Jackson becoming so weird.

Whitney Houston coming on the scene period.

Hip hop dominating R&B.

The death of funk.

I agree with the JJ, MJ, and funk died parts of your post. Good calls. I would also like to add that it's quite sad to me that the MAJORITY of artists today are signed, sold, and marketed on looks primary, talent (and that term is used loosely) secondary. Sure, there are artists like Ani DiFranco & pj Harvey who don't go all t & a to sell albums (though, unfortunately, they don't sell many albums), but even touted "Singer/Songwriter" artists such as John Mayer & Jewel (remember - she didn't start out as a pop singer) have been put into pretty little packages, posed for mass-market photo spreads, and let music videos try to sell their latest efforts for them. Singers don't even need to 'sing' anymore.

And as much as I love what some artists have done with the medium, I must say that MTV really did play a part in killing quality music. It seems that the current school of thought adheres to the following maxim: 'Who cares that songs by Usher, Nelly, nameless boy bands, Christina, Britney, Jessica, Ashlee, and Lindsay are pretty much crap? They look good in videos and can garner tons of revenue by sounding mediocre and canned anyway!'

Also, I remember the good ol' days when rap artists made their own albums, pop or r&b singers made their own albums and ne'er the 'tween should meet. Sure, once in awhile they congregated (like MC Lyte on Sinead O'Connor's I Want Your Hands On Me), but now, every song out there seems to have the word "featuring" after the title, and that is then followed by at least 3 names. No more Ashanti, Fat Joe, R Kelly, Ja Rule, Usher, Nelly, etc. mix and matches. No no no.
