The fall of Boys II Men

The apparently have a tour going on, and they are playing a theater in my area that holds no more than 2,000 people. What in thee hell happened to them???

On top one minute, selling millions of albums selling out 20,000 seat arenas
The next minute can't give away their albums, and can't even sell out an old theater!!!

The give new meaning to "it's so hard to say goodbye to yesterday"!!!

i also think that music has changed so much over the years and i guess they're just not fitting in. anyway, isn't 2,000 seats a lot?

It is alot, but if you figured they started out so large so fast with fame, glory, and a huge fan base, I mean with hip hop/boy bands/britney/TRL they had a place and they are i think in their early 30's, so when their popularity faded in the late 90's they would place them in their mid to late 20's.

Sad.

The American public's fickle and does not care whether someone has talent or not. They were cool to people for a moment, now people have moved on to the next big thing.

I don't know about that. Where those really the same people (mostly white girls and maybe some boys) buying those records. I never dug any of them, but I have an idea that despite being a little bit annonying that Boyz 2 Men had a more diverse audience.

I don't bds70 for wanting to know what happened. It's really preplexing. They were SO popular and than fell so damn hard. Their last few releases have gotten little to no attention. It's pretty sad.

New Edition's latest album sold pretty well its first week. Aren't they just as old if not older than Boyz II Men?

IF YOU WERE THEIR MANAGER...

Who would be your target audience? Remember, the late teenagers and trendy 20s who bought their records in the 90s have moved on. So unless they seriously re-invent themselves (and there's only so far a group of clean living men approaching their 40s can go without looking silly) they're gonna continue facing the music.

I agree with Stymie's post to a degree, but age ain't it at all. I believe that some of the blame has to go towards Boyz II Men's inability to change. In recent years, they've kinda hunkered down into an adult contemporary sound and dropped their anchor. I was a big fan when they first came out (had my shirt, tie and jeans) in '91, but I think it would have been cool if they got a little experimental after the second or third album. If you don't change your flavor, folks will spit you out.

It's because they made the same album over and over and over and over and over again (with a few minor tinkerings here and there).

Hi all,

I know personally that there is another reason that they were dropped from their label, because of the toes that were stepped on when they were on top! There are some people that you cross, and some people you dont.

(If you dont believe what I am saying research the Stonecreek/Sony Music - Motown snub)

This is not the only incident, but there have been quite a few. Trust me I know why they wont even sell out the Keswick (that is the right theater you are talking about right? smile )

They are done.

Mike has a bad case of scoliosis, but he really was tired of touring around. They pissed him off when the said that he wasnt needed and they threatened to replace him. But he was smart enough to invest his money and is doing okay. He did screw up with the soul food restaurant in Cherry Hill though.

Why do musicians always try to open restaurants anyway?

(most fail!)

Patti had a restaurant and live music club here and that place only lasted 1 year!

We should start a thread about stars that try to start a club/restaurant that fail! lol

Hey isnt prince in that category as well?

it's sad but true. today's music is all about being gangsta. they are just too clean cut for today's market and no one would take them seriously if they tried to be hard.

The Fall of Boyz II Men

These factors attributed to their decline:

- Saccharin R&B fluff, they couldn't keep up with a changing pop landscape
- Couldn't update to the "R&B Thug" image that's currently vogue amongst male R&B stars (R. Kelly, Jagged Edge, Ursher, B2K, etc.)
- They didn't have that "thug" appeal or aesthetic (refer back to former factor)
- They fell off the radar with the Evolution LP and never recovered
- To put it bluntly, they were a "90's group." their success will be fully contained in that decade and they will never go beyond it. their best years are behind them. throw in the towel or do throwback shows. they will never get another #1 hit (just like TLC, EnVogue, Brownstone, Jade, SWV, etc.) We have to deal with that.

Yeah, these guys have really fallen upon hard times. They'll be playing state fairs pretty soon disbelief

But how many "hot" R&B male vocals groups are still around anyway? Jodeci,Next,112,Jagged Edge....I think they're all finished.

Boys II Men will be back in style when we have a 90s revival lol
