Soulful Rockers or Rockers with a Soulful Sound This is sort of in the vain of blue-eyed soul, but these are singers/musicians who have never crossed over to appeal to an R&B listening audience. Yet if you listen to some or many rock songs, you will occassionally hear a sound that attracts you to their music because you hear their pain or joy, or whatnot. Even include rockers with a pop crossover bent to them, but who have never crossed over into R&B, which means no George Michael, Michael McDonald, Hall & Oates, etc...
Anyway I will toss out a few: Chris Cornell: Black Hole Sun, his solo stuff, and Audioslave Freddie Mercury: Pick mostly any Queen song Anthony Keidis: Under the Bridge Lou Gramm: Between You and Me "Funkyslsistah… you ain't funky at all, you just a little ol' prude"!

John (Cougar) Mellencamp. I've ALWAYS liked him. I think he's "soulful." A friend of mind would call it "pedigree."  He's about the "heartlands" but I get a feeling he's familiar with soul music. For instance there's a referenc to Sam Cooke in "Ain't even Done With the Night", and in the video to this song, (I think it's this one) he gets worked up, drops to his knees, and a band member drapes a jacket (cape?) around his shoulders, reminiscent of James Brown.

I saw them years ago (on a bill with the Amboy Dukes) when they were using the Bob Seger System name. There are a few acts that pop into my head, though I'm not sure they're a comfortable fit on this thread...
1) Gram Parsons - he did a couple soul covers as a member of the Flying Burrito Brothers (Dark End of the Street and Do Right Woman) as well as a definitive version of Love Hurts as a solo artist (I generally think that's an unforgivably sappy song, but he gets it right). 2) The Band - Marvin Gaye's Don't Do It was a fixture of their live show, and their first three albums consisted of heart-felt-but-not-sappy Americana. Then they turned into a vehicle for Robbie Robertson's self-mythologizing, and sorta sucked, I guess...but the Last Waltz is still a hell of a concert film, IMO. Van Morrison owned that film when they played Caravan, which of course leads me to... 3) Van Morrison - Astral Weeks - I don't think anything more needs to be said about that... | |
