If u do a bit of research first, there's no competition. I had a 40G Ipod and eventually got sick of it. It really has no features and the battery life is pathetic. Mine was meant to last up to 8 hours but in reality it's more like 4hrs max. The battery was constantly dying on me and what Apple fail to tell u is that when it runs out in 12-18 months the cost is 100 euro to replace it. Let me share some real talk with you. The "18 month" MYTH is UNTRUE. Fact: I bought my first iPod (2nd generation) in March 2003. That same iPod turned 18-months in Sept. 2004. It is now November 29, 2004. Everything still works and it plays songs. The buttons are in working order. It rarely freezes. The battery is not dead, its life isn't shorter, everything works as good as the day I bought it. Plus, that "iPod 18 month battery life" thing is a highly publicized myth -- even if it did break down, you can buy a new battery on 1 & 2G models for $20-$40 on the net. Even more proof: iPod Battery FAQ I now have the 4G (bought it in July '04 -- because it's sleeker, my music collection outgrew the old 10GB and I like to update my electronics... haven't gotten around to selling my older 2G, yet.) The battery life is great on the iPod, IMHO. I don't know if you're the kind of person that hates to charge your battery every night, but that's what I do. I mean, if I use my iPod at work, I take the AC adapter with me because I know it's an 8 hour work day. I have no problems with the 2G's battery life. I can spend all day at the park, jog later that night and I'm cool. 4G's battery life is even longer. I go the whole day and never charge it. I use it around 5-6 hours a day and charge it maybe every other night (sometimes 3 days w/o charging depending on my usage). One thing I absolutely adore about the 4G iPod is the "On The Go" feature. I can make an instant playlist of my favorite songs or albums directly on the iPod without having to attach it to my computer and updated through iTunes -- and I can save it. Plus, there's a calendar, a clock, games, an audiobook feature, sound adjusters, notes, iSync compatible -- so how is it featureless? A lot of the things you've mentioned against the iPod seems based largely on hearsay, scuttlebutt and myth. . I owned an Ipod for a year and after a while the Ipod battery died well below the advertised 8 hrs. If u buy a battery on the internet wouldn't u have to replace it manuelly? I for one would have no idea how to open up an Ipod and I believe that's why you're meant to send them back, with most of the cost going into labour, not the actual battery. Transfering music completely drained the battery as well, not being able to use the adapter during this process. As for features, I'd hardly call clock, callender, and games worthy features. My phone has all of those and more. Audiobook and text files, though I never use them, are still available on my I-River. Personally I find having a radio, mic, and line in/out much more useful. And the I-River supports all formats, not just MP3. Also I found the volume to be very low. If I was in the noisy city centre or on a bus, even at max volume, the sound would still be drowned out. I'm sure there's a way around that using certain software, patches or whatever so I can't say if it's a universal problem but for me it was. IMHO the Ipod is pretty slick, but lacks substance when compared with other players. [Edited 11/29/04 12:57pm]

I don't have an iPod, but I bought the 40GB IRiver mp3 player, and it's one of the BEST gadgets I've ever had in my lifetime. I can put my entire CD collection on it (Prince, Mariah, U2, old school R&B and hip-hop, new wave, self-help) and it pays not only mp3 files but OGG and WMA files as well. It also can play uncompressed cd tracks which are ripped to it. The best part about that is that I can take it anywhere I want to, and it has a line in/out jack which allows me to hook it up to my home stereo. It doesn't take AAC files yet (which the iPod uses through iTunes), but I was told that they are working on a codec which I can upgrade to in the future.
