actually, for most of October, i was hardcore into him, having just gotten ahold of Want One. ironically, i've been overtaken by, first, Elton John, and now, U2, since then.
i passed on Want One last year because i was into other things and knew i'd get around to it eventually. didn't realize it would be a year later. now, 2 weeks before Want Two, the same thing has happened. i'll let you know how it is in Nov. 2005 "Awards are like hemorrhoids. I just watched an interview with Sir Elton John, who said he is mesmerized by Rufus Wainwright's creativity.

Most people are just put off by his voice. I heard his first albums, but never made the click until Want One, especially Vibrate. I like his innuendo. Then, the man's performance swept me offa my feet. He played a small venue in Amsterdam that had been sold out for ages, of course, so I had to contact my record co.-friends. Which is a nice thing when broke and really wanting to go. Too bad he just toured Europe solo, then returned to the US to begin touring with a band. I would have loved that too! By the way, that performance was special, as Fhunkin and I got to meet Dawntreader for the first time that night! I could not imagine my life without those two.... Don't you just love the Org?

And I just love his operatic tendencies.

That's precisely my problem with him. Remember that is just what most people say about Tori and Bjork. I think he embraces the limitations of his voice in a beautiful way. As soon as you hear the subtleties of Want; One (Grayking? Help me out here) you'll be at least an admirer. The remark I made about his operatic tendencies (I love that) stems from truth, as he was trained as an operatic singer. Want; One is an album that breathes sophisticated innuendo's and amazing lyrics. Delivered in that maybe somewhat deadpan voice, but once you get the hang of it... Even though Want; One is an album I only listen to when I am in a certain mood. Like now.... mellow. Laid back.

"Want One" is the only CD I've heard by Rufus. It surprises me I've never picked up more. I thought about getting the new CD last week, but didn't pick it up. It'll have to wait till after Xmas now.

Funny, you can't tell. I know what you mean though. Bjork and Tori are definitely acquired tastes.
