The Egyptian Lover

Everyone talks about today's rappers and hip hop artists being talented but I don't think so. Take a look at one of the old school rappers, The Egyptian Lover, and compare. He is the most talented one I have seen. He first came on the scene in 1984 with the hard jamming "Egypt, Egypt".

I have most of his albums and 12 Inches. I am not a musician but it sounds to me like The Egyptian Lover plays instruments. Sure, on some of the songs, there may be a little "snip" of a song mixed in but it is not the whole foundation and structure of the song...it is just a little snip mixed over the music every now and then. It's usually just one or two notes. The songs seem to be made from scratch with an original groove just like musicians make music. And he sure as hell knew how to get faster than midtempo.

Some of his jams are:

Egypt, Egypt
Girls
Freak-A-Holic
The Alezby Inn
Dance
You're So Fine
Dance
Planet E
The Lover
Baddest Beats Around
Kinky Nation (Kingdom Kum)
My House On The Nile
The Dark Side Of Egypt
Filthy
I Want To Make Love
D.S.L.s
And My Beat Goes Boom
The Ultimate Scratch
The Ultimate Scratch II
I Want Cha
Love Theme
I'm So Freaky
Work, Freak, Pump That Body

Does anyone else like The Egyptian Lover? Also, does anyone know how he goes about making his music?

Those were the days sad ...I remember that album with him posing in front of his Mercedes...Those old school westcoast jams were really such an interesting sound..I mean the whole sound of that era was so different from what was going on in New York...the whole vibe was different.
He´s from LA, right ?
Why did he call himself the Egyptian Lover ? What was up with that whole Egypt scenario? I highly doubt that that concept would work today.. lol
They had some weird alter egos back then...like Captain Rock etc.

There was also this old World Class Wreckin´ Cru album with Dr.Dre and Lonzo trying to look like Prince ( aftermath of the purple era )

The Egyptian Lover started out with the 12 Inch of "Egypt, Egypt" months before he released an album. "Dance" was a 12 Inch that was never on an album. "The Lover", "You're So Fine" and "Freak-A-Holic" are all also 12 Inches.

Those were definately good times. The East Coast started these jams with groups like the Soul Sonic Force, Planet Patrol, The Jonzun Crew, and Newcleus. As the tempo of the East Coast's rap seemed to be slowing down, LA's seemed to be getting faster. Also from LA, was The LA Dream Team. Miami was jamming at the time also with Pretty Tony, Freestyle, Trinere, and The 2 Live Crew.

I'm wondering if The Egyptian Lover got his whole Egyptian vibe from Twilight 22. Remember them? "Electric Kingdom" and "Siberian Nights". They had a funky kinda foreign sound going on before Egyptian Lover came out.

I remember The World Class Wrecking Crew...."The Fly" and "Bionic". Those were some jams. I'll take their music any day over the midtempo stuff that Dr. Dre eventually started doing.

are you sure it´s PRETTY Tony ? I only know about Gigolo Tony from Miami..
The Fly and Bionic are from 87 ....nice jams, but the album I mean was from waaay back, when they ( Dre & his crew) wanted to be Prince biggrin
You´re right about the Soul Sonic Force, but I think a lot of that style was invented in LA...
It´s great to go back on memory lane and reminisce about the good old times with likeminded people...the net is takin us to the next level I guess lol

There was a Pretty Tony and a Gigolo Tony. Gigolo Tony had a song called "Smurf Rock". Pretty Tony was part of the group Freestyle and had the song "Jam The Box". Freestyle would release a 12 Inch, then Pretty Tony would turn around and release a 12 Inch...kinda like Roger used to do albums with Zapp, as well as solo.

I think Gigolo Tony is from Miami. I'm just assuming that Pretty Tony and Freestyle are from Miami because they are responsible for Trinere. I could be wrong.

What I meant by Soul Sonic Force and the others started everything from the East Coast was the whole fast/dance rap thing. The East Coast seemed to have a "space" sound with a fast tempo, the west coast definately took the fast/dance rap and made a style of their own with it. biggrin

I have no idea what his real name is. I never even thought about it until you mentioned it.

By the way, off topic, you commented on my new signature line once, now I am going to comment on yours.....I LOVE IT!!! I live in a red state but I'm sure as hell not proud of it. I wish they colored each individual county instead of the whole state so everyone could see the real picture. I live in the capital city of the state and it is blue, but the rest of the state, the rural, so-called "moral majority" was red. I commend and thank you blue states for proving that not all Americans are ignorant idiots. There's a reason the red states are colored red, "red" is short for "redneck".

Not gonna jack this thread... but thanks for your comments... too bad for USA and some other weaker 3rd world countries (who think and live differently from us), that there weren't more "blue" states. neutral
