It's Tron's fault; my current musical relapse; JOY DIVISION!

What can I say? My sweet friend Tron got me all Tori Amos-y two weeks back. But two weeks back is two weeks back and now I am totally into Joy Division again! Just cuz he posted a Joy Division song as best song (to him) ever.

I stuck it on and am now again possessed by the material. It is so strange how you can ignore a certain band for some time and then have this mood where you NEED to listen to them.

My fave during this relapse Wilderness, Shadowplay and the Gruftgesänge bootleg...more later on!

And I discovered alot of bootleg material from Holland! Joy Division in De Effenaar! Very funny to me somehow...

Joy Division is what North-West England actually sounds like if you apply aural synesthesia.

I thought for sure I posted on this thread. In fact I know I did. But it must've been one of the days when the org was going slow. I probably thought it showed up, but didn't.

But anyway, that's great that you've rediscovered them. Did you bust out the old vinyl or have you been a busy downloader?

They really are just about the best band ever. Nobody sounded like them before and a million have tried since. It's amazing that they never blew up like Nirvana or The Doors or another rock tragedy, but I'm kinda glad. More of my little secret that way.

Another thing that amazes me is the way I got into them. For some reason (and I still have no idea why to this day), I went out and bought their whole box set "Heart and Soul" in '98 without knowing a single song by them. I didn't even know if I'd like it. And even stranger, I put it away for a rainy day, knowing that the time wasn't right. But then I was in Chicago a few years later in a record store and overheard "Love Will Tear Us Apart". I ran up to the counter and demanded to know what it was. The girl was like "That's Joy Division". I told her I already had it but didn't know the music yet. She was like, "Damn, you're stupid. You've had the box set that long and haven't listened yet? Jeez." She was pretty blunt about it. She ordered me to go home and start listening right away. So I did.

And it hit me so hard. The timing was right cuz I've never felt such an instant and permanent connection to an artist before.

If I could have invented anyone's sound, it would be theirs.

I could go on and on and on but I won't. But let me just say good choice. thumbs up!

And Tori's especially nice in the Fall. Perfect for the changing leaves.

Oh and, we've both got Ian in our avatars. mr.green

For me as well. First got into them at age 19, when my then bf's younger brother played it all of the time and started giving me tapes.

To me the music is best listened to when you feel you have an actual grasp on your sadnes, or otherwise I would drown in it.

Now it feels like Ian Curtis is just grabbing me by the soul and putting an arm around me. So I am not alone.

Yeah. Remember the pic I have as avvie now? You had it too. Somehow I can't find it online. Not in a sparkly good quality. Do you have it?

PS. I have downloaded, as my record player is in storage and my wallet too empty to even buy food, let alone music.

I have come across many a thing. We need to compare!

To me, their music for some reason doesn't make me sad. It makes me feel extremely wild and out of control. But in a good way.

And affirmation of life sorta way.

I don't have much of their bootleggage. Mostly just the albums, comps, live stuff, box set and Warsaw.

And I don't remember having the same avatar that you've got right now. I had a pink & blue one of a different picture.

Yeah, I know the picture you're using. It's one of the more famous ones.

But the one that I had as my old avatar was this picture only highly altered. His face was made blue and the background was pink.

It probably was me. I think I'm the only one on here that regularly mentions them. So you're probably right.

I like that particular pic cuz it is not gloomy. So many pics of him are beyond gloomy, just cuz that is an image people want to cultivate, obviously.

I'm really going through a post-punk phase (how's that for alliteration), and Joy Division is one band whose name pops up everywhere I go. Which album is the best way into their catalog? I like some New Order, but some of their stuff is just too dance for my taste.

Thanks so much Gooey! I'mma have my friend give me some samples. We were at a club show with only this guy on guitar/vocals and girl on drums, and it was amazing!! I told him I loved this stuff, and he said it sounded just like Joy Division! They're a local band, northern cali. Check them out: www.moggs.com and let me know what you think. smile

Welllll.

They did not steal my heart. They're fun, but on listening the two songs on their site does not make me want to go out and buy some of their stuff.

Certain aspects of their music reminds me a bit of Soulwax, but I think Soulwax is, sorry to say, far superior.

The REALLY good Joy Division rip offs are of course Colder (French guy that takes the JD sound a bit avant-garde) and Interpol, who got the complaint they sounded too much like JD, but I think it is okay to have influences. Interpol's new album Antics is amazing; one of the best of 2004.

Hey, thanks a lot!

You are welcome. I myself ALWAYS find it hard to recommend anything to anybody.

But in JD's case I can only say; get everything. I myself started out with the respective albums on vinyl back in the day.

When it comes to MP3's; I want everything.

Maybe this is heresy to some but.....

I always kinda struggled with Ian Curtis' voice.

I got into New Order in a big way a couple of years back , and when I got to see them live, I was amazed by how much JD material they played (and why not, after all, they are their songs)...and by how great it sounded.

This is the gig that was released on DVD as "New Order 5 11"

Love Will Tear Us Apart in particular really suits Barny's lazy vocal style.

Anyone else agree, or are the JD fans gonna tie me up and stone me?

lol

PS If you go to www.amazon.co.uk and check out the reviews of the DVD, you'll see my wanky, overlong opinionated drivel on there too:smile:

I can understand that. I enjoy it, but it did take a while to grow on me. It was the music, lyrics, and passion behind it that made me dig JD. Ian is one of those guys like Dylan, who are great frontmen, in spite of their strange voice. Ian's voice is weird, but after a while it really starts to grab you. It certainly fits the music.

That's cool. I've never seen New Order live, but I'm glad to hear that they still play the JD stuff. Personally, I like both groups, but I don't compare them. Sure, early NO is in the same veign, but they really went in a pretty different direction.

I think even the band themselves were unsure of whether to play the JD stuff at one point. Thankfully they came back to it!

These were the JD songs:

Transmission
She's Lost Control
Atmosphere
Love Will Tear Us Apart
Digital
Ceremony

Kinda the obvious ones, in some cases, but....man, Transmission with modern day bass bins kicking out that intro bassline was pretty damn fine!

I am glad you had the New Order experience. I never saw them live, so I could not make any comments concerning that subject. But if there's any person that 'deserves' to play those songs, it's them.

I have never been one to stone anyone that plays other people's songs. Not with JD, not with Prince.

Unles they do a bad job (Jordan Knight; I Could Never Take The Place Of Your Man or Tom Jones's Kiss).

When they do a great job, like delivering a better version than the original (Sinead O'Connor's Nothing Compares 2 U) or a version that kinda makes a pun at the original, but is still magnefique in it's own way (Grace Jones's She Lost Control) I am totally okay with it.
