Understanding the new D'angelo aside, that's a list of awesome albums I should try to hunt down anyway... I haven't heard quite a few of those. In fact, I don't know who did the last 3 albums.

But I get what ?uest is describing here.. it seems like a rawer-DIY-guitars aesthetic, with alot of soul. smile

i want d'angelo to make an album that sounds a little like deee-lite's "dewdrops in the garden" crossed with prince's "come" album, with a bit of blur's "the great escape" and sonic youth's "goo" album mixed in, and if he could toss in some elements of "ziggy stardust", "age of consent", "big science" and "i got them kosmic blues again mama", that would be great, thanks.

I just want him to sound like D'Angelo...his previous album had moments of his genius, hidden amongst the clouds of smoke bollowing from his recording studio. Some people should not have too many recording options. Just play, mf.

what was that "irony" thing that novabreaker was talking about? lol

Is he suggesting that D'angelo is out of shape now?

That was pretty obvious judging from that clip of D at the Raphael Saadiq show (http://www.pookierecords.com/videos.html)

And speaking of Ray, I just want to know if he's gonna be on the album or not.

his name hasn't been dropped yet--i remember in 2002, raphael said he and d had
started writing songs for the new record. but i guess a lot has changed since
then.
i believe jesse johnson will be on there (quest reported d and jesse have been
seeing eachother on the regular). and there are of course the usual suspects
quest, pino and spanky.

but it's pretty much all speculation.

btw, be on the lookout for a couple of "voodoo" session recordings that just
got leaked on okayplayer--check the post "oh my fucking gawd (part 3)" on the
okayartist board. or visit soulseek. the following songs have been leaked: "joe
texan", "funky drummer" and "pete rock".

(i recommend all funkateers to go and check 'm out!)

purchase and study the following:

-let's take it to the stage
-tales of kidd funkadelic

study and absorb and research this shit now.

memorize it.

understand why the albums i mentioned were important in their historical context.

lower your expectations. this WILL throw you for a loop."

i don't know if he meant it this way or not but, sorry, that all comes off as terribly pretentious. assuming that people won't "understand" a record because they haven't "studied" some influences. duh.

i just wanna tell quest...um, once upon a time, those sounds were all new and people "understood" them. d'angelo will not be the first to mix genres and he won't be the last.

though, in the end, i'm sure he just meant it as a way to get folks excited.

i guess quest is trying to say d will not be coming back with anything that's remotely close to be called "neo soul"--i guess d wants to make sure he won't "just" be seen as the artist who started that (doomed) movement. i believe d is trying to create an album that will, once and for all, silence critics that have been cynical from the start (easier said than done of course). i guess he's trying, again, to make an album noone will expect from him.
i also think he's been experimenting sonically (which he'd already started on with "voodoo")--just look at the influences ("revolver", "abbey road", "on the corner", "electric ladyland", etc.)--all revolutionary albums in that perspective. man, if my expectations would be anything close to reality, i'd be the luckiest dude alive. lol.

Yeah that his live show was hot! horns The things he did with those grooves! drool

Hey gooey why do have such a hatred for weed smokers? lol hmm
Btw if you took a couple of puffs off of that good shit they have in the shops in your native city, Voodoo would sound so much better, trust me. smile

all are epic as fuck.
imo--most need a haircut.

but shit i know the marketplace aint even ready for.

i guess it's save to say this is a release to look forward to. questlove's
response only adds to the excitement. but i guess it'll take some time before
the release of this record.

Shit, if I gotta buy Miles's "On the Corner" TWICE to even enjoy D's new shit, then forget it! smile

I-can't-make-up-what-kinda-album-I-wanna-make D'Angelo? Him?

I remember people raving about his previous album.....THREE years before it came out.....lame-assed album that was all over the place except hitting the G-Spot his first album touched upon. If he can lay off the smokez it actually might have substance this time.

But Hey Gooey! That album was deep, man! It was deep!

Yadayadayada.

You won't get any argument from me on this one. I thought Doodoo was awful and its one of the resons I started to hate neo-soul. I could care less about D and that stupid quote from ?uestlove. Many artists have been inspired by that list of albums, but delivered the goods instead of just trying to copy and paste.

CynicKill

He's an artist. He wants to do different things. But lets make one thing clear, anything D does will be deeply soulful.
