I don't think there are any. There are some good covers. But I think the original is always the best.

The Passenger by Siouxsie. I thought that song sounded by-the-books on Lust for Life.

I wouldn't say always. Always covers a lot of songs. There are bound to be exceptions. I'm sure other people will post them here.

For example: No way in hell is that crappy "Nothing Compares 2 U" by The Family better than Sinead's remake. No way.

I don't really consider that a cover anyway, because neither was the original song by the original artist. I prefer Prince's version to both of those. I know it wasn't originally recorded by Prince, but I think it's a different case when artists record a song penned by someone else.

I mean, yeah, I suppose there are exceptions, I just haven't heard them. There are good covers, just none that are superior in my opinion.

I suppose there are some better covers of songs that were already crap, too. smile

But, yeah, I'm generalizing here. Just when I went to post I thought about covers and none came to mind. I usually get outraged when artists cover a song. I heard Anne Hathaway cover Somebody to Love the other day, good lord.

I think most of us are biased when it comes to this because it's usually the version that we heard first that sounds the best...so if you heard the cover first, it sounds better than the original and vice versa.. cool

I think Prince's version is crap as well. Sinead changed the arrangement and actually made the song listenable. I didn't think that was possible when I first heard the track on the Family album.

What about "Venus" by Bananarama?

Or "Who's Lovin' You" by the Jackson 5?

I think there are some good covers, even ones that improve on the original, but I agree that covers often evoke outrage and a cover should never replace the original. Here's some covers I really like though

Got to get you into my life: EWF's is better than the Beatles IMO
We Can Work it Out: Once again, Stevie surpasses the Beatles version
Respect: Aretha, sorry Otis
who's loving you: Michael's is THE definitive version
que sera sera: would ANYONE on this board prefer the Doris Day version lol
I feel for you: Prince's version is good, but with the combined powers of Chaka, Stevie and Melle Mel....

I think the success of Devo's cover of "Satisfaction" owes alot to the irony of deconstructing such a triple-A rotation rock classic. I like it.

most songs, though not all, that tori amos has covered. well, in most cases they are either as good as the original or better. the only one i don't really care for is her cover of enjoy the silence. snoozefest to me.

in most cases, though, i don't dig covers too much.

I'd have to agree with that. She at least is able to equal the originals most of the time, which is quite rare. Sometimes when I don't know the original, I don't even want to cuz hers is all I need.

i'll tell you, man, she fuckin' owns those songs when she's done with them. i'm not saying they're all better but she owns every single one of the covers she does. her version of i'm on fire or wrapped around your finger...this bitch...she is forever pumping my pussy!

"I'm On Fire" is cataclysmic. Sweet Jesus!

She always said her favorite Prince song was "Condition of the Heart". What I wouldn't give to hear her tackle that. omg
