I was in Old Navy the other day and I heard...

A cover of The White Stripes' "Fell in Love With a Girl"
... it was a girl singing it in the R&B style. Anyone know who it was? I'm pretty curious. Here's the Lyrics.

Thanks biggrin

Fell in love with a girl
fell in love once and almost completely
she's in love with the world
but sometimes these feelings
can be so misleading
she turns and says "are you alright?"
I said "I must be fine cause my heart's still beating"
She says "come and kiss me by the riverside, bobby says it's fine he don't consider it cheating"

Red hair with a curl
mellow roll for the flavor
and the eyes for peeping
can't keep away from the girl
these two sides of my brain
need to have a meeting
can't think of anything to do
my left brain knows that
all love is fleeting
she's just looking for something new
and I said it once before
but it bears repeating

You're welcome. smile I would just like to say that the soundtrack in Old Navy stores is always perfectly marketed to me.

Hot tracks I have heard in Old Navy:

JJ Fad "Supersonic"
Human League "Keep Feeling Fascination"
George Clinton "Atomic Dog"

I swear, the music I hear in the EXPRESS store I would buy, if they put it on CD and sold it. They play some great, obscure tracks that I LOVE but never hear again. sigh A lot of retail stores play great music.

I was in H&M in NYC and they had a LIVE DJ in their store. She was so cool. She mixed up these songs in this order...

Janet - All Nite (Don't Stop)
Britney - Breathe On Me
Kylie - Slow (Chemical Brothers)

Needless to say, I was dancing in the racks. lol

Apparently the time gap between original and covered songs just keeps shrinking more and more.

Must be hard to be original in this day and age.

actually, 30-50 years ago, it wasn't uncommon for two different artsits' renditions of the same song to be a hit within a year or so of each other.

Slightly different situation, though no better. 50 years ago what you usually had were songwriters, singers and producers, and they each remained focused on their specific role. The songwriters would sell to the producers, who would train the singers. Often however, songwriters would sell the same song to multiple labels, and producers would throw the same song at multiple singers and flood the market to see which ones would stick. For evidence of this one needs to look no further than the "Twist" revolution. Songwriters wrote about a hundred thousand "twist" songs and threw them at anyone who would take them.

I've said this before, multiple artists performing a song written specifically for sale is different than a cover to me. And Joss Stone taking a song from the White Stripes, seems like an entirely different situation.

But the situation doesn't matter, because I hate most covers anyway! mad Not because most of them are bad, but because they seem to be motivated for all the wrong reasons.

If these artists are willing to sacrifice their "integrity" to get a big record contract, then they don't deserve to get signed in the first place.

Several artists get signed that write and perform their own material. The White Stripes, for example, since they're relevant to this topic.

Ahh. I thought you meant non-cookie-cutter like "original," didn't know you meant writing your own material.

I thought they were one and the same, really. I suppose you could have a performer with a different style that does nothing more than cover other people's songs. Course, I would expect if they truly were different they'd want to apply their style to their own music, which by default would also be different.

Pin-ups was a good album of covers. Slightly different though, because Bowie had already established himself as an original.
