... it was a girl singing it in the R&B style. Anyone know who it was? I'm pretty curious. Here's the Lyrics.

I swear, the music I hear in the EXPRESS store I would buy, if they put it on CD and sold it. They play some great, obscure tracks that I LOVE but never hear again. A lot of retail stores play great music.

I was in H&M in NYC and they had a LIVE DJ in their store. She was so cool. She mixed up these songs in this order...

Needless to say, I was dancing in the racks.

Apparently the time gap between original and covered songs just keeps shrinking more and more.

Must be hard to be original in this day and age.

Slightly different situation, though no better. 50 years ago what you usually had were songwriters, singers and producers, and they each remained focused on their specific role. The songwriters would sell to the producers, who would train the singers. Often however, songwriters would sell the same song to multiple labels, and producers would throw the same song at multiple singers and flood the market to see which ones would stick. For evidence of this one needs to look no further than the "Twist" revolution. Songwriters wrote about a hundred thousand "twist" songs and threw them at anyone who would take them.

I've said this before, multiple artists performing a song written specifically for sale is different than a cover to me. And Joss Stone taking a song from the White Stripes, seems like an entirely different situation.

But the situation doesn't matter, because I hate most covers anyway! Not because most of them are bad, but because they seem to be motivated for all the wrong reasons.

Several artists get signed that write and perform their own material. The White Stripes, for example, since they're relevant to this topic.

Course, I would expect if they truly were different they'd want to apply their style to their own music, which by default would also be different.

Pin-ups was a good album of covers. Slightly different though, because Bowie had already established himself as an original.
