Jeff Buckley-Hallelujah
I love Leonard Cohen, but Jeff's voice just gives me chills, especially on that track. (If someone already said it, I don't care-Jeff deserves the attention.)

Sometimes when I don't know the original, I don't even want to cuz hers is all I need. i'll tell you, man, she fuckin' owns those songs when she's done with them. i'm not saying they're all better but she owns every single one of the covers she does. her version of i'm on fire or wrapped around your finger...this bitch...she is forever pumping my pussy! I SOOO agree with that. I never liked Nirvana, so I never paid attention to "Smells like teen Spirit" After Tori's version... OMG!!! "America is a continent..."

Joe Cocker "With a little help from my friends"
Prince "One of us" (you people have no taste if you don't agree ) Prince "A case of u" (i think Joni Mitchell has an annoying high whiney voice and the structure of her songs is always the same: a fast sung verse followed by a chorus sung in that high pitched annoying voice) [Edited 10/30/04 1:12am]

"Hurt" by Johnny Cash is one, and at the moment I'm really enjoying Embrace's version of D12's How Come and the Scissor Sisters "Take Me Out" both originally covered on Jo Wiley's Live Lounge. Speaking of the Scissor Sister's their version of Confortably Numb is way more enjoyable than every Pink Floyd record in existance. Oh and Pet Shop Boy's "Where The Streets Have No Name" is better than U2.
I quite enjoy cover's actually, when there's a bit of thought been put into them. I'd heartily recommend going out and getting some Harmless compilations (such as Gimme Shelter or Paint It Black - described on the cover as kaleidoscopic funk rock collision, or something like that) to hear how interesting a cover can be. Prime cuts would be The Isley Brother's Machine Gun/ Ohio (Hendrix/ Neil Young), The Meters version of Birds (Neil Young again) and Merry Clayton's Gimme Shelter. I also remember hearing a fantastically funky version of I Got A Feelin' by The Beatles once but I don't know the artist. If anyone can help me out....??? PS Avoid Paul Weller's new album of covers. Stick with the Button Downs disc on last years B-side boy set. [Edited 11/1/04 10:46am]
