BJÖRK (?!?) out of all people has NO place passing judgment on Beyoncé. How's she gonna criticize a chick for something 1,200,452,394,203 artists do?

i don't think she was passing judgment. i think she was just voicing frustration that beyonce was doing pepsi commercials. bjork wanted beyonce to sing on her last album, after all - she's a fan. i don't think she's saying beyonce is BAD for doing commercials - she just wonders why she feels it's necessary. bjork's in a different headspace than someone like beyonce - bjork is all about the art. she also comes from a fairly privileged background and a culturally progressive community, so i'm sure her worldview is quite different than someone who doesn't have a problem with "making that cash".

Oh, get off your high horse.

First of all, where the fuck did I mention musical education? I was not talking about her musical background, which is of course infinitely more sophisticated and authentic than Beyonce.

You act as if Bjork twaddles to the convenience store wearing getups like those - if she did, that would be "real" for her. She's crafted a very unique and ambiguous image, but it's one that works for her, even if a lot of the "uniqueness" is lifted from various cultures and icons. She doesn't actually live that image out in everyday life, but it sure works wonders convincing people like you that she's some sort of ethereal muse. And it's been very successful. If she had no music to back it up, you'd be ragging on her for style over substance. And there you are.

bullshit! i couldn't care LESS about what she wears. Her music is wonderful which is all that I care about. that she has a great visual sense is a bonus. her visual side is in a totally different league than beyonce.

Also, WHEN she's on the WORLD STAGE, she milks it and plays up to that image. So fucking what? It's called fun. You expect artists to BE their image 100% of the time? It's not less real for her to walk down to the corner store wearing whatever the fuck she wants....track pants, whatever. you're just like so many rabid consumers who expect musicians and artists of any kind to be "icons" day in, day out who cater to your own idea of what a "star" should be....but she's just a human being. Bjork is a real artist, a down to earth person (ever seen her interviewed?) who obviously doesn't really care for consumerist crap and you've missed the boat on that.

Where did I say that (this is the second time you've pulled ideas out of thin air and labelled them mine)? You really missed my point entirely. THE POINT IS: An artist with an immaculately-crafted image should not diss another artist with an immaculately-crafted image for exploiting cash flow. It's hypocritical. If this were, say, Ella Fitzgerald or BB King, well, they can say whatever the fuck they want. But since Bjork uses smoke and mirrors just as much as Beyonce, she doesn't have a leg to stand on.

And, yeah, if you thought her music sucked and she was incredibly popular, you'd be bitching about her succeeding via distraction, style and controversy. Obviously. Why do you think so many people on this board bitch about Madonna?

Without taking sides or sounding harsh, I think the explanation is pretty simple.

Sure, everyone in entertainment uses their image to get ahead. Even if an artist is anti-image like say New Order or somebody, that still becomes a selling point.

But I think the difference is what you're selling. Of course Bjork uses imagery and fashion. Perhaps better than anyone. But she's doing it for the sake of furthering her art. She's selling herself. And that's what artists who go for fame and recognition do, they sell themselves. But that doesn't necessarily mean selling OUT.

When you start selling soda and fast food and cosmetics and deodorant and cars, you run the risk of looking a wee bit fake. I don't always have a problem with it. But I can see how someone as singly motivated as Bjork would.

Bjork isn't saying she hates Beyonce's fashion sense or her choice of eye shadow. I think she's just expressing disappointment in a fellow artist she has a lot of respect for. I don't find this catty or mean-spirited at all. Not even hypocritical. It's a bit strange coming from Bjork. I'm not used to her talking about other celebrities much. But it certainly isn't slander.

You are shifting your negative opinion of Bjork somewhat everytime to just vent.
We carefully pointed out the difference between Bjork and Beyonce's images, the tools they use and what they try to reach, but you just twist another bit of your negative-no-matter-what-opinion to keep on venting.

So now she is hypocritical for having an opinion and now somehow Madonna is involved again. We were not talking about Madonna. hmm

How am I shifting my "negative" opinion of Bjork?

I actually think she's musically brilliant, and even if I don't happen to "get" it, I can respect her for her talent and actually understand why other people like her.

And I cited Madonna as an example of someone whom a lot of people believe is untalented, but who "gets by" on flash and style. We're not allowed to reference other artists in a discussion now?

I don't think it's necessarily a bad thing for artists to do commercials. We always hear horror stories about how record companies rip off artists,so they should make money any way they can,and getting paid millions of dollars for doing a one-minute commercial isn't such a bad deal.Look at it this way...Beyonce is "hot" right now and her name carries alot of value. But one day,she might become a forgotten has-been,struggling just to get a gig in Vegas (especially considering how fickle today's pop audiences are). She has to milk her current success for all it's worth, because it may not last forever.

Another thing....her commercials have NOTHING to do with her music. She is still a legitimate musical artist, regardless of the other ways in which she chooses to make a quick buck.

For the love of all that's sacred, I can't believe this frickin' thread has gotten so nuts. The title is misleading, because Bjork didn't "diss" Beyonce'.
It's been pointed out several times already that she really likes her. I actually read this quote last week (in Interview magazine, I think) and thought nothing of it. She sounded concerned more than anything else.
