I remember in the fall of 1981,their song "I Can't Go For That(No Can Do)" was a HUGE hit.You couldn't turn on the radio without hearing it every hour.It reached Number One on the pop AND R&B charts. It remains my favorite H&O song.
The guys are touring this spring.Anybody going?

"Sara Smile" and "She's Gone" - gotta have it! This post not for the wimp contingent. All whiny wusses avert your eyes.

I think Hall and Oates have soul, and I really love Sara Smile, She's Gone, Wait For Me, I Can't Go for That, Everytime You Go Away and many others. I think their legacy is tarnished by many of their hits that were very cheesy like Private Eyes, Kiss On My List, Maneater and a few others. But if you dig around their albums you find their the real deal when it comes to Philly soul. ______________________________________________

They do have an acknowledged love for the Philly sound and the Tempts. Their live dates with the TEMPTS reunion with Kendricks, Ruffin and Edwards were quite outstanding. Still much of their stuff smacked me just short of a KennyG /Michael Bolton thing. Hey I tease Dave a lot about his taste, but I still respect his knowledge of factual data. He's usually accurate and on the money in this regard test

Hey!! I love the song "Private Eyes"!...lol... Btw,I listened to their new 'Behind The Music' CD and here are my thoughts. It's NICE to have songs like "Sara Smile" and "I Can't Go For That" in great, remastered quality. But where is "She's Gone" and "Method Of Modern Love"? The live versions are kinda boring. The three new songs are pretty good, especially the soulful "Heartbreak Time"!!! Overall, the CD is an okay compilation but I'd be more satisfied with a 3-CD box set that doesn't leave out anything.

I've always loved Hall & Oates. Some of their earliest stuff was very good. Albums like Abandoned Luncheonette. I saw the VH1 behind the music on them and was quite impressed with the amount of early years stuff they did on the duo. I've actually seen H&O as many times as I've seen Prince. Prince will take over that battle after NYC tonight though. I still have a long ways to go to match my Jimmy Buffett concert going total.

I've always liked Hall & Oates, and actually saw them in concert back in '84 during their heyday.
My faves: Sara Smile One On One Maneater (reminds me of high school) Adult Education I Can't Go For That (No Can Do) She's Gone Rich Girl Wait For Me (Live From The Apollo) I can remember when ICGFT(NCD) first crossed the air waves. I was outside while my dad was working on our '70 Chevy Impala, and this song came on with the drum machine and bass line were oh so jammin'. I actually stopped what I was doing and went..."wait Dad, this is baaaad!" The video to One On One, with Daryl Hall walking the streets of New York shot in black and white are/were pretty artsy 4 the early 80's. The beauty of the song Sara Smile, (written 4 long time girlfriend of Daryl Hall, Sara Allen, who by the way co-wrote Adult Education) is so honest and pure. My brother named his daughter Sara, I'm sure it's because of this song. My NON-faves: You Make My Dreams Kiss On My List Private Eyes The last three, just 2 damned sugary. KOML and PE r just horrible repetitive crap. By the way, anyone else who 1st heard of Hall & Oates over the radio go 2 the wreka stowe and ask 4 that great new group Holland Oats??? Nice thread DavidEye, I'm probably gonna go buy that fuckin' cd now...thanx alot!!! |

JesseDezz is back in the house!!!
Though I haven't posted in ages, I visit the org regularly. So many threads - some crazier than others. This new format is definitely interesting. So cool to see regulars like PfunkJazz and DavidEye lay down the knowledge when fams get too caught up in their PLove. I see Gustavo still loves Steve Vai. Some things never change... BTW - I dig Vai, too. Anyway, Hall and Oates, though some of their stuff (Method of Modern Love comes to mind) was, admittedly, not as strong as some of their earlier classics, definitely has that "blue-eyed soul" thing down pat. I use this term affectionately,'cause I remember the first time I heard "I can't go for that", back in '81. I was coming back from a shopping mall with my relatives. We were in the car and all of a sudden this cool-ass drum beat comes on over the radio. Then the keys and guitar hook kicked in. And the vocals... Darryl Hall was the man back then. John Oates had some cool ass background harmony vocals, too. Then, I went back and got into "Sara Smile". Those two songs alone made me fans for life. Still, it's hard to get used to Oates without that mustache... Recently, I tried to get some young suburban white kids in their early 20's to check out Hall and Oates. After hearing some of their stuff, they literally laughed in my face. They kept remarking how "cheesy" the songs were. I also tried to school them in some James Brown and the PMan himself. They did, however, like "Vibrator". Hmmm.... Peace!!! My author page: https://www.amazon.com/au...eretttruth
