Yup. MJ never claimed to have "invented" it anyway. He acknowledges it as a b-boy move he picked up.

Over 20 years after the fact I would have thought it would be well known by now that he didn't invent it. Jeez, mah knees. This post not for the wimp contingent. All whiny wusses avert your eyes.

Just like Madonna never invented vogue-ing. duh. Pop stars don't invent moves, they exploit them.

It wasn't just break dancers. I saw mimes moonwalk long before Michael.
I don't want to put words into his mouth, but didn't he claim to have spontaneously invented it on the Motown special where he sang Billie Jean? Check this song out at:

It may have been "The Lockers" (the group with Re-run from What's Happening and Ozone from the movie Breakin') but I'm not sure. Michael has said more than once where he got the dance from, it's not and MJ original no matter how many die hard MJ fans think, I'm a huge MJ fan and I can admit that . Controversy, no, the truth, yes.
Ozone was never a member of the Lockers...i will say this again, he got it from jefferey daniel formerly of Shalamar and ex soul train dancer I don't doubt this is true! I remember Jeffery doin' it on stage during a "Shalamar" performance. This was way before 'MJ' ever did it! Jefferey was much better at it!

He did however invent 'The Robot' in '74 for the J5's Dancing Machine, and that'll do me. It's a far superior move than the moonwalk anyway IMO.
Strange though how he even takes a bashing for not inventing something (even though he never said he did anyway) well i didn't invent the lightbulb, so bring it on! [Edited 10/20/04 13:09pm]

I thought the guy from "Dance Fever" (For those too young to know it was THE dance show of it's time during the disco era) Danny Tario(sp) taught Michael how to moonwalk. The fact remains MJ does this thing better then anyone I've ever seen.

no denny terrio didnt teach michael shit.. LOL hell he could barely do the fucking Hustle.. are u kiddin me? I stand corrected. Danny taught John Travolta how to dance for "Saturday Night Fever". The guy from "Solid Gold" (Coolie) supposedly taught Michael how to moonwalk.

What is it with LaToya? She's always trying to take the spotlight off of Mike or diminish it. First, she came out and said Mike was guilty. Even people who wanted Mike to be guilty, thought THAT was fucked up. His own sister. People questioned her motives for saying that cuz it was so fucked up. Now this shit. Her crazy acting ass. Make me think SHE's got a thing for Mike. Damn. SynthiaRose said "I'm in love with blackguitaristz. Especially when he talks about Hendrix."

You guys are taking LaToya's statements about the moonwalk WAY too seriously. No one thought Michael came up with the dance. I'm sure breakdancers were probably doing it before Michael. It's hardly an attack on Michael.

twink69 said: As if Michael Jackson didn’t already have enough problems — now there’s a claim that he didn’t invent the Moonwalk.
advertisement The dance step is one of Jackson’s biggest claims to fame; the embattled singer is so closely associated with it that he called his 1988 autobiography “Moonwalk.” But now Jackson's older sister LaToya is claiming that a dancer from the television show “Soul Train” taught Michael how to Moonwalk. “I don’t know if you had this show called the ‘Soul Train,’” LaToya told British television host Frank Skinner this weekend. "There was this dancer Geoffrey, who was always doing the Moonwalk on that show. He taught Michael how to do it." LaToya said that it had been called the backslide, but claimed that Michael changed the name after he learned it from Geoffrey. “Sunday was the day to workout. Michael would take an hour and dance an hour straight, non-stop.” Jackson’s rep’s didn’t return calls for comment. repetition edit....
