Chic - Risqué (1979)

Chic - Risqué (1979)

This was such a great record. My favorite song, of course, is the legendary "Good Times," the much-sampled warhorse that was interpolated in the first ever hit rap single "Rappers Delight." The song is joyous yet wistful and has a touch of morbidity to it that is just outstanding. One of my favorite ballads is "Will You Cry (When You Hear This Song)." The track is Chic at their most understated and is irresistibly melodic as is "My Forbidden Lover" and "Can't Stand To Love You." There was something about Chic that was so elegant. To describe their work in snappy descriptive words: alcoholic, intoxicating and lush -- even more so on vinyl. Their tunes were more than just simple disco, they had a life and a soul to them -- each elegantly composed and musically rich. Nile Rodgers was an incredible producer and I wish this album was heralded more by critics and music listeners.

Their masterpiece is 1978's 'C'est Chic',but 'Risque' is a strong album as well. The opening track "Good Times" is just incredible, and one of the true highlights of the disco era."My Feet Keep Dancing" is just as good and I'm surprised that it didn't become a huge hit.The slow jam "Will You Cry (When You Hear This Song)" is another highlight. In the summer of '79,this was one of the essential albums to have.

"Risqué" proved that Chic owned the disco scene. They went out with such a bang on that LP.

I agree with you on "C'est Chic." Between that LP and "Risqué," Chic were at the peak of their creative powers -- no one on the disco scene (hell, a majority of what was on the mainstream charts around the time) could hold a candle to what Nile cooked up on that record artistically. Personally, I can just vibe to the lone instrumentals. "I Want Your Love" -- magical. The strings in that track are infectious. That track alone is worth the price of the album. "At Last I Am Free" and "Savoir Faire" are GEMS... and we all know "Le Freak."

This was music. This was life.

nod "I Want Your Love" is my favorite Chic song. It's so hypnotic and lush, with a warm yet somber melody.Sometimes I listen to that song over and over and over and over...lol...I go crazy over the arrangement, the strings just sound so incredible on that track! That song is sheer brilliance.

And the next track---"At Last I Am Free"---is just as impressive.Such an emotional ballad....that melody could bring a person to tears!

Great post. People who call Chic disco are selling them short. Thet were more than that. Musically, Nile Rodgers & Bernard Edwards were ahead of their time. I'm glad I still have these on vinyl.

Chic is one of my all time favorite bands. I LOVE Chic! Have all of my life. I don't think this is their best album,1978's "C'est Chic" is their best to me. BUT, the song "Good Times' was such a huge fucking song, and like DavidEye said, "My Feet Keep Dancing" was a great song as well, it's a good album. "My Feet Keep Dancing" to me always sounded like it should have been on "C'est Chic". I suspect it was a leftover.

ding, ding, ding!

Someone finally mentioned "A Warm Summer Night" - talk about LUSH!

Chic stood out of the disco era because they were a self-contained band within a producer driven genre, and because they were just badass musicians.

RIP 'Nard and Tony. sad

Did y'all catch the Chic reunion on VH1 Hip Hop Honors? They did Good Times and went right into Rappers Delight with the original Sugar Hill Gang. And then MC Hammer came out and I was like.....
