Rocker Rod Stewart sued by music promoters

LOS ANGELES (AFP) - Veteran British rocker Rod Stewart was in a US court Friday where is being sued for two million dollars by music promoters who claim he owes them money for a series of cancelled concerts.





The raspy-voiced singer, 59, showed up for jury selection in Los Angeles for a civil trial over a claim by three promoters that he failed to return a 780,000-dollar deposit for a cancelled 2002 tour of Mexico and South America.


The trio are seeking more than two million dollars in damages over the alleged outstanding debt.


Stewart and his business associates maintain that the promoters failed to pay up fully for the shows, even when he gave them extra time to raise the cash, forcing him to scrap the planned concerts and keep the deposit.


Fifteen jurors were selected and sworn in and opening statements in the case were scheduled to begin Monday.
