Tom Waits Sound His sound is so distinctive and innovative(sometimes scary)
What/Who inspired him to make a sound like that?? I downloaded a Winzip file with 19 Tom Waits albums, and right now i'm listening to the huge difference from his first albums(jazzy and country sound) to "Bone Machine"(undescribabel). btw, where's all the Tom Waits fans on this board?? I'm a big tom waits fan. got all his records. I saw him live once and it's still the best concert i've ever been to. best albums are in my opinion
1. Rain Dogs 2. Swordfishtrombones 3. Frank's Wild Years 4. The Heart of Saturday Night 5. Heartattack and Vine I woke up sunday morning with no way to hold my head that didn't hurt
and the beer I had for breakfast wasn't bad so I had one more for dessert

His new CD "Real Gone" is completely out of controll. Like a rusty tilta-whirl gone off its hinges! Waits beatboxing (And not looped) and his son spinning vinyl and still it is 100% Waits. Extended jams of a psychotic moonshiner chewing on live ammo!
His best work since "Bone Machine"

Huge fan. The change in Tom Waits's music started with 1983's "Swordfishtrombones". If you want to hear what inspired his new sound go Winzip yourself some early Captain Beefheart albums. You might also want to check out both Chuck E Weiss albums, to find out what Tom does in his downtime. I hope you actually go out and buy all 19 of those albums you downloaded, because Tom Waits is the kind of artist you should pay to breathe. His best work since "Bone Machine" I disagree strongly there. The album is very good, but it has quite a few retreads of past glories. I think "Mule Variations", "Alice" and "Blood Money" were all better than "Real Gone". There are three sides to every story. My side, your side, and the truth. And no one is lying. I'm also a big fan.
I am dying to see the man in concert. I read that his only show in America this year will be in Seattle. I'm sooooo jealous!

I love Tom Waits. I just posted about him a few days ago.
It seems like Louis Armstrong must be an influence. I have also heard him mention Ray Charles. His stuff in the 70's is great, but pretty conventional. But his 80's stuff does seem like some real inspired kind of new sound. I heard him mention Captain Beefheart in an interview recently, so maybe the above post is correct. I think that of those post 1980 records Swordfish Trombones is my favorite, and my favorite early one is Small Change. I just bought Real Gone, but I haven't listened to it yet. I also hear Alice is great, but I didn't buy it because I wasn't that thrilled with Mule Variations. Check this song out at:

Waits is king. One of the rare artitsts who holds up with musicians and critics. He has never conformed to any style.
He also tells the best stories in interviews. One of the most important songwriters ever. I love foreign affairs. There is a great austin city limits out there with him doing some songs off of there. The industrial sound is just so organic and comes acrosss even better live. The real gone album is cool, but not my fav so far. Sometimes these things take time. Good Stuff. Music is the best...
