One problem with these neo-soul artists is they take forever to come out with new music! D'Angelo comes out with an album every five years...Remy Shand is missing in action...Maxwell's last album came out, what, three years ago?...Erykah Badu admitted last year that she suffers from writer's block...

It becomes frustrating to support artists who give you new music only a few times each decade lol

oh hush David chair Where's Esther or Madonna...smile

She's working on a new CD as we speak, and it will be released by summer 2005 lol

The thing with me is... I'd rather an artist take their time and make a quality album than rush it into the machine just to appease the label and the fans. I think that was Maxwell's problem with Now.

Nah, I think you guys have it all wrong, (well some of U) Neo-Soul music is music that features more instruments (like Prince) and has that live band feel as opposed to keyboards and sampling. For instance, R.Kelly is the opposite of Neo - Soul, while Anthony Hamilton, Jill Scott, and Amel Lariuex are. New Soul encompases more instruments in the production - it's more of a throw back to the soul music of the 70's. I notice MTV, Real Player.com, and VH1 misinterpet the meaning of Neo Soul music.

There's nothing wrong with an artist taking their time, but come on...D'Angelo's last album came out in 1999! I think alot of these artists are simply trying too hard to make a "perfect" album...re-writing,re-recording,and over-producing the songs, instead of just letting things flow naturally. That's one thing I love about Prince,he doesn't try to make "perfect" albums.Even his masterpiece albums ('SOTT' and 'Lovesexy' for example) have their flaws and that's fine.He doesn't need to spend years working on an album.

I think Lovesexy is one of the albums he tinkered on too much. It sounds great, even though it sounds dated, but I remember stories in Uptown; Eric leeds telling that he remixed most of the songs to death, compared to their original guises.

For the rest you are right. Most "Messiah Hailed" artists (Maxwell; The New Prince! D'Angelo; The New Prince! etcetc) just get too much room to produce their own albums, resulting in (most often) a brilliant debut and the most tedious disappointing follow ups. The Baduh's, the Gray's, D'Angelo's, Maxwell's all FLUNKED in my opinion.

They all have talent, but lack vision, something Prince had in abundance up til 1991 or so. We want talents that borrow some of this and borrow some of that and then give it their own swing.

Imo the only songs on 'Lovesexy' that he tinkered with too much is "Eye Know" and the title track. Both songs sound a little over-produced,with too many things happening at the same time. But it hardly matters, since they are superb songs, especially the title track lol

Let me say that I love the album. But it also represents THE CURSE OF OVERPRODUCTION in my eyes, as it is the first album to solely come out of Paisley Park. A fixed place for recording became Prince's downfall when it comes to adventurous music.

I like Badu's voice, but her music makes me yawn and India Arie is boring, too. Alicia Keys is just regular ol' R&B and so is Angie Stone. I agree with the person that said, "What's so new about it?" --

It all sounds as though they are sampling old songs to me. It's nothing inventive. It doesn't "move" me. It's not brilliant. Neo-soul, to me, means, putting on an afro wig (or growing an afro) or getting dreadlocks and then singing about the same thing Ashanti sings about, just in a more "roundabout" way. Badu said it herself that her "stuff" is "Sophisticated gangsterism" -- yech! razz

I don't know how they are fooling some people! Having people think they are geniuses. Neo-soul is nothing more than people singing about so call stuff they think is deep. What has Angie Stone said that Ashanti or Beyonce hasn't said? Is E.Badu really that great of a songwriter!? If you go by "danger"-- I'd say "NO!" When you get right down to it: Badu is good at imitating. She can MAKE her voice sound like Billie H or Ella F. She can make her voice sound like Chaka's. She can whine and fake cry-- she's an actor at best that wanted a record.

There's nothing wrong with neo-soul, you're just getting old. I'm sure your parents have had these same feelings when they were younger.

NamePeace ended this thread earlier with the post that pretty much said nobody is satisfied even when given what they ask for. No matter what any of you think of any of these artists, they are all doing their thing. A lot of what is said about some of these artists also holds true for Prince as well. Supernova also made a great point about people turning into their parents and listening with a different set of ears when it comes to the younger generation's music. Personally, I think people are extremely cynical these days about almost everything and simply look for something to complain about instinctively instead of seeking enjoyment. That being said, someone should lock this thread and end the neo-soul bitchfest. You can't force artists to make the kind of music you want them to. Don't like it? Don't listen. Its that simple.
