MUCH too repetitious. I wish the sound would change. Someone needs to turn the sound of country upside down. Now bluegrass, I respect that. That's hardcore. Those cats can rock out on the mandolin like nobody's business and leave you in awe.

i can dig on the old skool stuff - i love me some johnny cash, tammy wynette and loretta lynn - but the "contemporary" stuff is just a little beyond my ability to appreciate.

Alot of the "contemporary" country videos are mirroring the current rap videos. Great. Bling twang.

Keith Urban is cool - I dig his guitar playin', too. Brad Paisley's playin' is off the hook, but that "Celebrity" song just freakin' stays in my head...
Always been a Vince Gill fan - I love his guitar playing. Used to have a crush on Mindy McCready. Just heard she's kinda burned her bridges in Nashville. Brent Mason (top Nashville session player) has a cool solo album he released a few years ago. It contains a variety of styles. Real cool listening. Allison Kraus is crazy talented. Angelic voice. I dig Rascal Flatts guitar player - the singer is okay, I guess... My author page: https://www.amazon.com/au...eretttruth

I don't know if they're considered country, but I really like Tarnation/Paula Frazier: http://www.paulafrazer.com/
I think I read them being described once as "ethereal country".

only the classic style. new country doesn't do anything for me (though Shania Twain is okay).
give me Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson, Lorreta Lynn, Patsy Cline, Tammy Wynette and (very old and very new, but not the stuff in between) Dolly Parton, any day. [Edited 9/30/04 16:15pm] "Awards are like hemorrhoids. Sooner or later, every asshole gets one."

I too am down with the old school Country AND Western music. Also love Gram Parsons, one of America's great songwriters. a psychotic is someone who just figured out what's going on

I don't listen to a lot of it, but Alison Krauss is definitely cool.
Johnny Cash even more so-I'm not so big on the old old country, but some of the newer stuff is pretty good-Garth I've always liked. I tend to like the country that verges into rock territory more. (I can't believe I actually admitted that.)

I was raised listening to pretty much all types of music. My dad was into Rolling Stones, Steppenwolf, Led Zepplin, etc. My mom liked Dolly Parton, Tammy Wynette, Hank Williams, Glenn Campbell, and other country. My older brother was into metal, and my younger brother - for some odd reason - got into Buddy Holly and classic rock n roll around 9-years-old. I listened to pop and R&B.
ANYway, the country music is what I remember most. I love all the classic stuff up through the early 80s. Hell, I even like a lot of the Urban Cowboy type crap. Maybe it's bullheaded of me, but anything that plays on current country radio doesn't even remotely resemble country! It's glammed up pop rock. Shania's the worst of the pop-country crop. I'm sorry, girl's from Canada - where'd that "southern" accent come from?

I was really drunk one night armed with only a steak burrito, dry beer breath, and a t-shirt while visting my friend in college and I stopped at a local gas station called, 'Cum n' Go'. There were some free country music CD samples by the register so I snatched one, as well as a whacamacallit and some lip service from the attendant. As soon as I found my friend's place, and better yet the bed that I was sleeping on, I put the music into the player and fell soundly asleep. 24hrs. later, I had purchased a Stetson hat, leather chaps, snake skin boots (spurs included) and a raw shotgun attitude... the only problem, I drove a 2dr. Toyota, but I throughout the ordeal... I remained shirtless.
Since then, I have come a long way from my country music exposure and I have successfully completed a 12 step session and am currently listening to, 'In a Metal Mood' by Pat Boone. Wish me luck.

Aye to country music - although I'm into the old school more than the new. In fact, I ain't into the new at all. And fuck so called "alt.country" too. They're just remaking Elvis Costello's "King of America" album over and over again, on repeat, ad nauseam, repeat to non-fade.

[Edited 9/30/04 15:45pm] you rang mylord? I really like old school country: cash, nelson, jennings, kristofferson, williams, etc...I appreciate it's 'back to basics' character. Just some acoustic instuments and a great voice, that's all you need to get some great music. Also, i like music that has some sence of tradition and history...country's all about that. It's as real and down to earth as it gets. It was not in vain...it was in Minneapolis!

I really like Shania Twain and LeAnn Rimes, so no, I guess (considering most people consider them pop).

Besides my mom getting hip to P when I was growing, she also introduced me to country or what's called old school country. I couldn't agree with you more. The current state of country music sucks. Those who are new to country wouldn't know anything about the artist you mention or the following: Meryl Haggard or Waylon Jennings.

with the critical resurgance of people like Johnny Cash and Loretta Lynn... and the rising interest in alt.country.... is it possible that we could be on the verge of coining a new term/rage... "neo-country"? "Awards are like hemorrhoids. Sooner or later, every asshole gets one."
