Mariah Carey goes independent!

It's confirmed: Mariah Carey is forming her own record company. This is the word we get from her attorney,Don Passman, who informs us that the new entity will feature not only Mariah's talents, but other artists',too.According to Passman, they still do not have a launch date or a name for the label.

Some are bound to question the wisdom of the 31-year old singer taking on the stress of her own company such a short time after suffering an emotional and physical breakdown---with many citing Mariah's workaholic ways as a contributing factor.

(I got this info from my morning newspaper)

Perhaps this will open the door to more Prince/Mariah collaborations? Prince seems to prefer working with "independent" artists.

Now, if she would stop wearing those clothes that wouldn't even fit an 8 year old and occasionally sport another face than the 'I'm just having an orgasm' look in her videos. People might actually notice that she has a great voice again.

But good 4 her on the record company thing. More artists should do that.

I hope it all works out for her. It's good to see another major artist disconnecting from the matrix. Having been pimped by the majors for 15 year and selling a bizilion records, the question is, what the fuck else could she possible do for them? Why should Mariah Carey not own Mariah Carey the comodity? Good smarts baby!
Nice body 2!

Remember the flack Prince received back in the mid 90s when he split from WB? Okay the name stuff did him no favours but the Warners contract was at the heart of it all.

Well in the last few years more major artists have started falling out with their record companies, like Mariah.

I hope one day Prince will be viewed as a pioneer, not just musically but also from the biznez side of things!
'I loved him then, I love him now and will love him eternally. He's with our son now.' Mayte 21st April 2016 = the saddest quote I have ever read! RIP Prince and thanks for everything.

I agree..

has anyone notice prince does everything lets say 5 years before everyone.. and gets ALL the bad press for being "odd" ..

but then we see all these other people years later.. and they just walk right through that door.. prince created.. with "no scars"..

Prince didn't invent all this.. but he was probably the first MAJOR artist to do many things.. exploring new venues.. to improve his take on the business side $$$

remember when he was slammed for:

the internet
getting out of his major label contract

NOW it seems everyone can't wait to do this

Marah was dumped because of disapointing record sales and a Movie that cant even be promoted on DVD. They invested lot in her, hoping that she would be the next Madonna. There is nothing brave about what she is doing, she has no choice.

Wow! Sounds interesting....she used to be one of my favorites up until she started changing her style a little, but the woman got talent, would like to see what she could do on her own, sounds like good news! Would also be cool to see her and Alicia Keyes working together, I don't know...just a quick thought I had, I like them both.

Mariah was dumped because the folks at Virgin got paranoid because of just ONE flop album. They seem to have forgotten that Mariah was the top-selling female artist of the 90s.Yes,she sold more albums than Madonna,Janet and Britney combined! There is no reason to belive that she is "over" based on the less-than-spectacular sales of 'Glitter'.

Let's see how Mriah will sell CD's without a major record chain supporting her..

Personally, I truly detest her songs, but she's quite popular. I'd like to see how much of that is due to big bucks promotion..

In my opinion...Mariah Carey has yet to make that essential, artistic--ho-holds barred--- definitive album. I know she put out lots of CDs in the 90s. But to me, it stills seems like her tour de force album has yet to be made. Time will tell---that's for sure!!!

Mariah was, in my opinion, good only up to the "Music Box" album. After that she began repeating herself over and over again.OK she's got a great voice, but none of the creativity or inspiration of Prince or Madonna. I think the flopping record was about to come sooner or later.I don't think she'll be able to exist as a major artist without some major record company behind her because she's simply not that great.Talent is not just the voice...

While I'm big on MC, I simply can't stand a whole album of her songs. She's got the technical apsects of music in place, but she hasn't got much of a stage presence to pull off the live gig.

Well-put. Not only that, after Music Box something happened to her head....it started swelling big time. She'd positively make me puke in interviews I've seen. I was like, "wtf?".

Hope she does well in her new venture, all the same. Why is it most artists only do this after they feel their record companies are failing them though?

I just heard a rumor that Mariah's "independent" label will actually be a joint venture with Def Jam Records.Still no official announcement,so we'll see.I'm sure she will use the services of a major company,in some form or another.

There is reason to believe it: the reason is 'Glitter'. Some would say it wasn't a good reason and they were being hasty. But they possibly worked out that the ride she was enjoying on the back of her ex-hubby's connection was over. All they would be doing is hitching a lift on a bandwagon that was out of fuel.

Anyway - what's with the 'more' collaborations with Prince - when and what has she recorded with him?

When Mariah was recording songs for her 'Glitter' film, she and Prince completed a song together. For whatever reason,it did not appear in the movie or on the soundtrack. But I remember hearing Mariah on a local radio station, talking about the collaboration.

smile LOL

Don't make me fall out of this chair ever again!!!! Her whole image I hate to say kind of steered me away from listening to her...How many times do we have to see you with the F@*# me heels on and your ass hanging out!! Does all your song have to be ghetto fabulous...Has she utilized every top rapper or r&b group when her albums are out? I still like her but the music is overshadowed by all the drama surrounding her..what happen to the simple black catsuit and big hair Mariah? I really hope she finds some really good material and producers to hook up with and find a different stylist with all that money she can afford to put a little more style on that body...After a while that Look at my parts gets old...Can't wait to see what's next coming from Mariah!

Nooooo! I'm sorry. I don't like anything about the woman, well except for her taste in home furnishings. I did read somewhere that she is working on or already completed another film (can't remember the name of it or even where I read this) since Glitter. Is this true? If it is...how did she manage that?

cool, i'm glad she will have her own label, and control of her own music.....it's good to have more control over what you do.....it's your music after-all, but i do hope she still has someone to give her advice in her choices...and helps her re-structure her career.
she is very talented...she just needs to re-think things and come back stronger than ever, i hope that's what she does.

peace!

I hope so, David. When I watched Glitter I really couldn't believe that she even allowed it to come out. I thought it was just bad. I guess the same thing could be said about Prince and a certain movie he put out, too. Btw..do you know why she's all of a sudden started to put movies out? Is she wanting to get into acting or something? Or is it just an extension of her musical career? Watching Glitter reminded me a lot of Purple Rain, in a sense. A female version years later.
