Randy (Randall) Jackson- Overlooked? ....
OK...I've decided to go out on a limb and declare that Randy (Randall) Jackson was one of the best songwriters of the Jacksons (I know that's not saying much, bear with me for a moment)... I'm basing this purely on the strength of the following: You Push Me Away(from "Destiny"), One More Chance( from "Victory", and the Janet Jackson B side) Time Waits For No One(from Triumph), Give It Up (from Triumph), ...And The "Randy and The Gypsies" album: (waiting for laughter to die down...)True, that shirt is the worst thing Since Prince's Purple Rain haberdashery and a precursor to Jerry Seinfeld's " Puffy Shirt"! but seriously, though.... if you can get past the ridiculous Pirate cover, and please forget the 1rst song on the album, "Perpetrators" (That was Crap), and consider the following tunes: The Love We Almost Had, I Can't Wait(For Tomorrow), Not Because of Me, Luv Thang, Need You, Love You Honey... I thought it was a great piece of late 80's Pop, the man definitely had a way with hooks and changes, besides being a multi-instrumentalist...if things had been different, if he wasn't part of such a Carnival Freak Show Celebrity family, who knows... Incidentally, He's the One that hipped Janet to Joni Mitchell... [Edited 9/16/04 12:53pm] " I've got six things on my mind --you're no longer one of them." - Paddy McAloon, Prefab Sprout

Randy's songwriting saved "Destiny" and Randy and the Gypsies IS a very good album. He tried to capitalize on P's Purple Rain look as well as Mazarati's look. But it was a good album. His thing was very underrated. SynthiaRose said "I'm in love with blackguitaristz. Especially when he talks about Hendrix."

OMG, I love this thread because I always thought Randy's talent was so overlooked as a musician and a songwriter. Shake Your Body Down (To The Ground) remains an all time favorite! Didn't he have one more solo album without the Gypsys? Been gone for a minute, now I'm back with the jump off

I just ordered the ‘Triumph’ album today to get at ‘Give It Up’…love the piano and drums at the end of that song.

Wow
Wow, wow. Paligap you are the man. Knew that Randy (Randall) had a bit of a solo thing going at some point but was unaware that this record existed. Still can't get over that cover. I keep expecting Johnny Depp... ...to swing into the frame from a pirate ship docked nearby. Or an opposing pirate gang shows up... ...and they break into some choreographed swashbuckling battle/dance number ala Beat It on the high seas. This is too funny. I'm sorry. Gotta find some samples. tA Tribal Disorder http://www.soundclick.com...rmusic.htm "Ya see, we're not interested in what you know...but what you are willing to learn. C'mon y'all."

Just a bit of a stretch...The album rocks from beginning to end and didn't need "saving". Also, all the bruhz wrote "Push Me Away", half the songs on the album were written by all five of them. But, yeah, Randy rox! Always has...and he is an excellent songwriter and producer. I have that "Gypsys" lp, but I just don't feel it. I think Randy was playing it safe by riding on the nuts of NewJackSwing when he was/is capable of doing it his own way. And for the record, Marlon will always be the most overlooked in the Jackson clan! I'm sick and tired of the Prince fans being sick and tired of the Prince fans that are sick and tired!

Yeah, There was some o' that going on, and that probably explains the Bryan Loren-penned New Jack things on there....Different strokes, I guess, but IMO, Randy's songs on there are very well written , even if some suffer from late 80's/ early 90's production. If they were played acoustically, for example, they would be seen in a much different light, particularly the ballads... Oh, I love your avatar! I remember Randy and the Gypsy's but, I've never realized his talent. Randy's the Jan Brady of the Jackson Family, I guess.

Yeah, I like that album, but does anyone remember his first single back in 78. It was called "How Can I Be Sure" it charted at 91, but the B-Side has Janets debut in "Love Songs For Kids"
Also, what aboout Marlon album, Baby Tonight. It had the number 2 smash, "Don't Go" PRINCE: Always and Forever
