The best way for me to convey CORE influences is to think chronologically. In the past decade or so, I've kind of returned to some earlier faves, appreciating their craft a bit more as my ear has grown more sophisticated.
Childhood - preteen (ear development and drums) "The Wiz" KISS Michael Jackson Prince Lionel Richie Stevie Wonder Chuck Mangione Sade Billy Joel Elton John Anita Baker Isley Brothers Duran Duran James Brown Marvin Gaye and durn near anything my parents or family had spinning. Early teens (guitar & keys, stage presence & early writing) Prince The Time Steve Vai Paul Jackson Jr. Tuck & Patti Jimi Hendrix Michael Jackson Anita Baker Living Colour Guns n' Roses Hair bands Whitney Houston The Winans BeBe & CeCe Commissioned Level 42 Terence Trent D'arby Late teens/college (guitar, keys, bass, production) Prince Babyface/LA Teddy Riley Fred Hammond/Commissioned Whiteheart Petra Phil Keaggy Eric Clapton Stevie Ray Vaughan Allen & Allen Wendy & Lisa 20s to present (all of the above and vocals) Prince Bjork Jimi Hendrix Clapton SRV D'angelo Meshell Jane Child Patti Griffith Jonatha Brooke/The Story Sade/Sweetback Neil Finn Wendy & Lisa Sting Fred Hammond I Fiona Apple Paula Cole Anita Baker Rachelle Ferrell George Duke Marcus Miller Level 42 Ray Charles Stevie Wonder Terence Trent D'arby The Beatles Richard Smallwood Rich Mullins Nichole Nordemand Jesse Johnson Natalie Merchant Alana Davis Ani Difranco Boyz II Men and Norah Jones But, those are just the major folks. I can play upright & fender bass, rhythm guitar, vibes, drums & all kinds of percussion just fine(not pretty solid but I get by). But I'm a piano/keyboard freak and if I sing a lil' I'm good at harmonising(altho I tend to harmonise & sing like an instrument rather than like singing str8 like vocals). Anyway here're my influences.
Vocalists(in no special order): Now, my REALY influences are pianists/keyboardists and here're some of my heroes(in no special order): -The Duke -Teddy Wilson -James P. Johnson -Art Tatum -Willie "The Lion" Smith -Fats Waller -Hazel Scott -Mary Lou Williams -Oscar Peterson -Monk -Ahmad Jamal -Bud Powell -Herbie Hancock -Patrice Rushen -George Duke And my ULTIMATE piano hero,,, -Mr.Erroll Garner(Thats where I leanred my piano playing from). As far as other various musicians go, here're some that I look up to: Thats it for now, I guess! | |

I have recorded songs for many years for my own pleasure.I used to play alto sax,but I gave it up.Now,I fumble around with acoustic and electric guitar, electric keyboard, drum machines, and electric bass.I recently purchased a fretless 4-string bass. And I have been influenced by everything I've ever heard in my life.It started with me pop's album collection of Miles Davis,Harry Belafonte,Chuck Mangione,Stevie Wonder,Sammy Davis Jr,and so many more. Then,I would listen to sof rock on the radio which was stuff like "baker street", and "right down the line".Then,I met the jacksons and the Bar Kays and then Prince and Parliament. All this early music gripped me.Later,I discovered harder rock and just kept falling in love with all that I heard. I know Prince's Dirty Mind really blew doors open for me. And I've never really met a style of music I didn't like. That is,except for country.I can't handle that.
