I enjoyed Huey Lewis and the News. They weren't one of my favorite groups but nevertheless, they did have a few songs that I liked. Andy is a four letter word.

Anxiety said: So I remember when I was a kid in high school, among my group of outcast hipster geek friends, the most UNcool thing a person could listen to was Huey Lewis & the News. They were just the grossest, the grodiest, the modiest, the most embarrassing thing you could be caught listening to at any given time. They were what the jocks and young republicans listened to - Huey Lewis sang about SPORTS, for chrissakes! And, I mean, so did John Fogerty, but at least he LOOKED dirty.
So now, 20-25 years later, how has Huey Lewis evolved? Is he like kitschy-retro-cool like the Bee Gees were in the '80s? Is he still gross and uncool and something only dads listen to while washing cars and barbecuing wieners? Has Mr. Lewis' credo indeed come to pass...here, there and everywhere - is it, in fact, hip 2 b square?! I'm just askin' is all. What on God's earth possessed you to think of such a thing?!?!?! I want a new drug.... Ok, they had some good tunes. My boyfriend pointed out that the baseline to I Want a New Drug was lifted from Ghostbusters.

They played their own instruments, sounded good live and supposedly had a song ripped off. That's gotta count for something. Sure Huey looks like he should be selling you insurance or trying to recruit you for Amway but so what. Small World is probably the most adventurous release, TOP horns and all. (as adventurous as you could get and still be Huey Lewis that is.)
Nothing heavy, just a fun record. There, I said it. Where's the rest of you "unhip to be square" chickens? tA Tribal Disorder

I like a handful of songs by Huey Lewis and The News...
"Hope You Love Me Like You Say You Do" (1982)---an extremely soulful song featuring horns by Tower Of Power.Gotta love this one! "Do You Believe In Love" (1982) --their first big hit,if I'm not mistaken. "I Want A New Drug" (1983) "If This Is It" (1983) "You Mean The World" (1988) "Perfect World" (1988)

http://www.soundclick.com...rmusic.htm Yeah,Ray Parker Jr. basically ripped of Huey Lewis."I Want A New Drug" was a big hit in early 1984,while Ray's "Ghostbusters" theme song didn't come out until the summer of '84.Huey even sued Ray over this.

I had on VH1 Classic again yesterday, and they were playing a Huey Lewis video. Probably their worst song too.
"Yes it's true.....I am happy to be stuck with you.....and I can see....oooo-waaa-oooo.....you are happy to be stuck with me...." I did like "Power of Love" though. "I saw a woman with major Hammer pants on the subway a few weeks ago and totally thought of you." - sextonseven

I thought they were a great band (although it was never the type of music I had blairing from the car).
They wrote, they played, they were great live, and they had the Tower of Power behind them. And they had harmony! .

Pretty bad stuff. But persoanlly I'll never forgive Huey Lewis for sueing Ray Parker Jr for Ghostbusters. He claims it's a steal from "I Want A New Drug". It's not enough of any steal. And critics say the guy who wrote "Pop Muzik" back in the early 80's probably had a case against both of them. But he didn't sue. Huey Lewis needed to get a grip.

Anxiety said: though i will admit that i think some of mellencamp's songs are pretty good... Why you hidin'? Mellencamp had some great songs, and personally, I think Lonesome Jubilee and Scarecrow are both excellent albums. Back on topic: Huey Lewis and the News had some fun tunes, but I gotta agree that they became progressively more flat sounding as the 80s came to a close. Living in a Perfect World was one of the more watered down singles of that era. Do You Believe in Love gets stuck in my head for good reason - it's a great, catchy pop song. That's what they were good at.
