What is it about b-sides? Is it me or do they always sound MUCH BETTER than most of the songs on the main cd release? Why is that? Is it because they are treasures that you only get if you buy the single? Do you think if you switched the b-side with an album track it would change how you feel about both songs? Would it make the album better?

I agree. I've bought many singles based on the b-side. Some artists have so many, they; particularly from 1 album that they should just release a second one or a double disc. LOL
But I guess that's part of what boosts the singles sales. Speaking of which....I can't believe I havent picked up the Cure's 'dots' b sides and rarities yet. Funny how sometimes they view it as a 'throw away' track, or not thinking it fits on the album. But fans think the opposite. I've made my own cd of b-sides from a couple of my favourite artists and think.. 'damn. this album should actually be released!'

Duran Duran's MAKE ME SMILE - b-side to the Reflex is a great example. I may be in the minority here but this song for years has always made my head bop around.... MIRROR MIRROR, b- side to Stevie Nicks's Blue Denim (1994). THe song MIRROR MIRROR was actaully recorded for her 1985 ROCK A LITTLE ALBUM and it is one of her most intense, angry songs...very popular with die-hard Stevie fans. We all wonder how this song got dropped from the ROCK A LITTLE album and randomly resurfaced as a B-side 9 years later! Let the rain come down...17 days....

B-sides are usually cool because it's something the artist wants to release, but knows deep down that it won't do well commercially (because most commercial music is made for 13 year old girls... it's true unfortunately!). Hence, the B-side is the perfect option. It gives the listener the opportunity to listen to something a little different, and hopefully, this will turn them on to what the artist is really all about. Good points. However a song doesn't have to be commercial to be on the album, it just can't be a single. Maybe I'm wrong, or I just don't think like record companies do, because they make these kinda decisions.

I just bought some Bjork singles for b-sides like "Domestica" and "Scary", both very amazing songs, which sparked this thread. Do you still have that Tori double disc of Under the Pink with the Bee Sides? The "throw away" track thing, (not fitting with the rest of the cd) is something I thought of too. Maybe it just didn't flow well with the rest of the album? So then it becomes a b-side, that makes sense. I made a Duran Duran b-side cd and it's soooo amazing to hear the "other side" of Duran Duran. Narud Narud?

oooooh. Vina, I could make you a Bangin' Britney b-sides album too.
Or a Britney-Björk-Tori b-sides. All three of your favourites on one disc. Heaven.

No. I threw it away. Yes I still have it. Why? Silly, I already copied it from you! I mean that's a good example of an album made up of b-sides. Britney never did anything like that!

Make me Smile is a live cover though. I like the song too, it brings back memories and "makes me smile". But, it wouldn't have fit on 7 & the Ragged Tiger. That album is a little watered down to begin with... Oooh, see, Secret Oktober could have made that album better. Or at least they could have gone more in that direction on the album. There are a couple of other outtakes from that time as well. I remember them saying they kinda worked that album to the ground and the Reflex especially was brought back to life by Nile Rodgers when he remixed it for the single. Duranie tangent!

Last year I made a comp of every Tori Amos b-side and non-album track (from soundtracks and various artists collections) and it was over three hours long. And that's not including the live non-album tracks. The Cure just recently released a 4CD box set of mostly b-sides. Many of them are quite good. During the 80s, every Siouxsie And The Banshees single had not one, but two b-sides. They are currently being remastered and collected for re-release.

I just love the live version of it...and think it would have made a great song to actually record in the studio and if so i think it may have fit well on the DD or RIO record...of course I can't think of any songs that MADE the cut on all the DD albums that were covers or weren't written by all/come of the band members... BY the way Vina i love your Duranie tangents! Keep em coming! Let the rain come down...17 days....

I just think having a b-side is more of a exciment cause ure getting more than what they offered on the lp, and its like an addition to the music they already offered.
dunno.. if the b side was on the lp, u wouldnt tell the difference..

If memory serves me the Beatles had some really big songs that were b-sides....unfortunately I can't remember which ones at the moment. This post not for the wimp contingent. All whiny wusses avert your eyes.

PJ Harvey has put out a steady and, I might add, stunning batch of b-sides with every cd release. Every single contains at least one and sometimes up to 4 b-sides. Her best b-sides are the ones for TO BRING YOU MY LOVE and STORIES FROM THE CITY....Awesome! She could definitely release a CURE-like box set of them in a few years.
